SWR Revives Curchorem-Sanvordem Iron Ore Loading Amid Karnataka Demand
SWR restores iron ore loading at Curchorem-Sanvordem

In a significant move to capitalize on growing industrial demand, South Western Railway (SWR) has initiated work to restart iron ore loading and unloading operations at Curchorem-Sanvordem station. This decision comes as railway authorities seek to capture increasing iron ore transportation opportunities emerging from Karnataka.

Revival of Iron Ore Operations

During the recent divisional railway users consultative committee (DRUCC) meeting held in Hubbali, railway officials confirmed that civil works will commence shortly at the Curchorem-Sanvordem station. The revival of loading and unloading facilities follows opposition from residents of neighboring Kalay village regarding iron ore unloading activities at Kalay station.

The Karnataka-Goa iron ore corridor has been identified as a major growth opportunity for the railway division. Officials emphasized the substantial increase in iron ore demand from Karnataka and the strategic importance of positioning SWR to benefit from this emerging market.

Major Infrastructure Projects Progressing

Despite facing local opposition, SWR remains determined to push forward with the completion of the Margao-Vasco track doubling project. Committee members were informed that the project has already achieved 55% progress and is targeted for phased completion by June 2026.

In parallel development, the Shantinagar new bridge project at Vasco has reached 70% completion and is expected to be operational by December 2025. These infrastructure enhancements are part of SWR's broader strategy to improve connectivity and capacity across the region.

Station Modernization Initiatives

SWR has unveiled ambitious plans to develop Vasco station into a model railway station alongside Ballari (Bellary). According to Divisional Railway Manager Balla Meena, the comprehensive upgrades will include:

  • Digital display boards for real-time information
  • Organized parking facilities
  • Wider entry gates for improved passenger flow
  • Escalators for enhanced convenience

These improvements aim to significantly upgrade passenger experience while enhancing station aesthetics and functionality.

Additionally, SWR announced plans to expand CCTV surveillance coverage across all currently uncovered stations. Tenders for this security enhancement project are being finalized, with installation expected to be completed by March 2026.

During the DRUCC meeting, Chandrakant Gawas, who chairs the Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry's logistics committee, presented several important suggestions to further improve railway operations and infrastructure in the region.
