Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Ramp Up LPG Supply for Migrant Workers
In response to global supply disruptions, the oil industry in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has significantly increased LPG availability, with a special emphasis on supporting migrant workers. V C Asokan, the State-Level Coordinator for the oil industry in these regions, made this announcement on Thursday, highlighting coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Tamil Nadu government.
Key Measures to Enhance LPG Distribution
V C Asokan detailed several critical steps taken to bolster LPG supply. A major initiative involves doubling the daily availability of 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinders. This enhancement, which began on April 7, 2026, has resulted in supply levels reaching approximately 70% above pre-crisis benchmarks. Further actions are in progress to specifically double the availability of these 5-kg cylinders for migrant populations, targeting key areas such as Chennai, Thiruvallur, Coimbatore, Erode, and Tiruppur.
Targeted Distribution Strategies
The distribution plan is meticulously designed to reach migrant workers directly. LPG distributors have been deployed to labor clusters, with cylinders supplied at industrial hubs, construction sites, and worker settlements. Additionally, over-the-counter sales are facilitated through petrol pumps and shops in regions with high migrant concentrations. On-ground sales campaigns are actively being conducted to ensure widespread awareness and access.
Simplified Access and Documentation
To improve accessibility, new 5-kg Free Trade LPG connections are being issued with minimal documentation requirements. Only basic identity proof, such as Aadhaar, is necessary, streamlining the process for migrant workers. Existing customers can also obtain refills with ease, ensuring continuous supply without bureaucratic hurdles.
Assurance of Stable Supply
Asokan reassured that LPG supply remains stable across both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with adequate stocks maintained at bottling plants and distributorships. He emphasized that 5-kg cylinders are readily available for migrant workers, underscoring the sector's commitment to mitigating the impact of global disruptions on vulnerable populations.
This comprehensive approach aims to safeguard energy access for all, particularly those in transient communities, during challenging times.
