Tirupur Textile Industry Embraces PNG for Sustainable Future
Tirupur's textile sector is undergoing a significant energy transformation, with exporters and industry leaders championing the widespread adoption of piped natural gas (PNG). As global sustainability standards become more stringent, stakeholders assert that this shift is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in international markets.
Awareness Drive Highlights Clean Energy Transition
An awareness program on PNG usage, co-organized by the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) and Adani Total Gas, took place at the TEA premises on Saturday. The event underscored the urgent need for industries to transition to cleaner energy sources. Kumar Duraiswamy, joint secretary of TEA, emphasized that the move to PNG is not merely a reaction to geopolitical events but a strategic necessity as global industries increasingly prioritize sustainable production.
He highlighted that under ESG (environmental, social, and governance) norms, exports to European markets must align with sustainable manufacturing practices within the next two years. This will necessitate a gradual shift away from traditional fuels like LPG and coal. While acknowledging the challenges for Tirupur's industrial ecosystem, Duraiswamy noted that this transition offers an opportunity to enhance global competitiveness.
Gas Connectivity Becomes Essential for Industry Survival
TEA president K M Subramanian stated that gas connectivity will soon be indispensable for industries. He revealed that Adani Total Gas is ready to accelerate PNG infrastructure development in Tirupur. Subramanian referenced the upcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) regulations, which will enforce rigorous monitoring of sustainability standards throughout the production cycle.
He added that global brands such as H&M, Primark, and Mothercare are increasingly demanding compliance with sustainability norms, including the phasing out of coal and adoption of cleaner fuels. Subramanian stressed the need for a reliable gas supply in Tirupur, which employs nearly one million people, pointing out that gas shortages have driven production costs up by approximately 15%. He urged the government to expedite the PNG rollout and assured full industry support.
Adani Total Gas Details PNG Connectivity and Pricing
K R Venkatesan, cluster head of Adani Total Gas, provided comprehensive details on PNG connectivity in Tirupur, covering registration procedures, government guidelines, and industrial gas pricing amid the ongoing LPG shortage. This presentation aimed to facilitate a smoother transition for local industries.
The collective push for PNG adoption reflects Tirupur's commitment to aligning with global sustainability trends, ensuring long-term viability and competitiveness in the textile export market.
