Two women die in soil cave-in at Madurai construction site

Madurai: Two women workers died after soil caved in a 12-foot pit that was dug for construction of a marriage hall near Silaiman in Madurai district on Friday evening. The deceased have been identified as Dhanalakshmi, 46, of East Silaiman, and Tamilarasi, 60, of Silaiman.

Details of the Incident

According to police sources, the construction of a marriage hall had commenced on bare land near Thangasamy Theatre in East Silaiman. The land belongs to Thangaraj of Viraganoor. On Friday at around 4 pm, construction workers were engaged in digging a pit approximately 12 feet deep. Suddenly, a portion of the soil caved in inside the pit. The two women, who were working near the pit, were pulled in and buried under the soil. They suffocated and died on the spot.

Rescue and Investigation

Upon receiving information, police and fire and safety personnel rushed to the spot. They recovered the bodies and sent them to Government Rajaji Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered by the Silaiman police. Further investigation is underway.
