Udupi Hotels Directed to Adopt Alternative Fuels Amid LPG Supply Disruption

In response to significant disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK has issued a directive urging hotel owners across the district to transition to alternative fuel sources. The supply chain issues have been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in West Asia, prompting immediate action to ensure business continuity.

Immediate Shift to Firewood and Electricity Recommended

During a crucial meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Friday, Swaroopa TK emphasized the urgency for hotels to adopt readily available alternatives such as firewood and electric stoves. She clarified that while commercial LPG supplies are affected, domestic LPG cylinders remain unaffected, ensuring household cooking needs are met.

"Several hotels in the district have already begun utilizing firewood and other alternative fuels," Swaroopa stated, encouraging others to follow this proactive example to maintain operations without interruption.

Economic and Employment Implications Highlighted

The Deputy Commissioner underscored the critical role of the hotel industry in Udupi's economy, noting that it employs approximately 25,000 to 30,000 individuals. Many of these workers hail from other districts and states, making labor stability a key concern.

"Any prolonged disruption could force workers to seek employment elsewhere," she cautioned, warning that this could lead to a severe labor shortage in the future, impacting the district's hospitality sector significantly.

Collaborative Efforts to Ensure Fuel Availability

To facilitate the transition, Swaroopa engaged with multiple stakeholders:

  • She requested sawmill owners, with over 80 operations in the district, to ensure a steady supply of firewood at existing prices, as confirmed by the Sawmill Owners' Association.
  • She directed Mescom officials to provide adequate and reliable power supply to hotels opting for electric stoves, addressing potential infrastructure needs.

Government Advocacy and Future Steps

In response to a plea from the Hotel Owners' Association for at least 25% of the previous commercial LPG supply, Swaroopa committed to advocating on their behalf. "I will write to the government and actively pursue this matter," she assured, highlighting her dedication to finding a balanced solution.

The meeting was attended by key officials including Ravindra, Deputy Director of the District Consumer Affairs Department, alongside representatives from various associations, ensuring a coordinated approach to mitigate the crisis.
