Vedanta Plant Tragedy Deepens as Death Toll Climbs to 21
The devastating boiler explosion at Vedanta's power plant in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, has taken another grim turn as the death toll has risen to 21. The latest fatality occurred when an injured worker succumbed to his injuries during treatment, highlighting the severe impact of the April 14 industrial catastrophe.
Latest Victim Succumbs in Raipur Hospital
Burn specialist Dr. Sunil Kalda confirmed that Kismat Ali, a worker hailing from Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, passed away at a private hospital in Raipur. Ali had been on ventilator support following the explosion and died on Friday evening, becoming the 21st victim of this industrial disaster.
Scale of Injuries and Critical Conditions
The explosion left a total of 36 workers with severe burn injuries, with several still undergoing intensive treatment at various medical facilities across the region. According to medical reports, four critically injured workers were referred to Raipur with over 90% burns sustained in the blast.
Tragically, two of these critically injured workers died earlier during transit to medical facilities, underscoring the extreme severity of their injuries and the challenges in providing timely medical care.
Investigations Point to Serious Operational Lapses
Even as medical teams continue to battle for the lives of remaining patients, preliminary investigations into the April 14 tragedy indicate serious lapses and operational negligence at the Vedanta power plant. The explosion has raised significant questions about safety protocols and maintenance standards at industrial facilities in the region.
The remaining patients from the explosion continue to be in critical condition, with medical authorities monitoring their progress closely. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of industrial safety regulations and more rigorous inspection regimes for power plants and similar facilities.
As the community mourns the loss of 21 lives, attention is increasingly focused on accountability measures and preventive actions to ensure such tragedies do not recur in Chhattisgarh's industrial landscape.
