Vijayawada Hotels Face Imminent Shutdown Amid LPG Crisis

The hospitality sector in Vijayawada is on the brink of a major operational crisis as a severe shortage of commercial LPG cylinders continues to disrupt services across the city. Representatives from hotel associations have issued a stark warning, indicating that numerous food establishments are likely to suspend their operations by Sunday if the supply issues are not resolved promptly.

Restaurants Already Halting Operations

RV Swamy, president of the AP Star Hotels Association, revealed to STOI that several prominent restaurants and well-known chains have already ceased operations since Thursday. "A panic situation continues to prevail among restaurateurs over the supply of commercial cylinders, and it is expected that nearly 15 more big restaurants will close down if the current situation continues in the city," Swamy stated.

He further explained that despite the ongoing LPG shortage, many restaurants have been attempting to manage the crisis by preparing food at their residences and transporting it to their establishments to serve customers over the last three days. However, this temporary measure is no longer sustainable as restaurant owners are now completely out of gas supplies, facing an imminent forced shutdown of their businesses.

Government Meeting Scheduled for Monday

In response to the escalating situation, the government has scheduled a high-level meeting with hotel association representatives on Monday. Swamy expressed hope for a positive outcome, emphasizing the urgent need for at least a partial restoration of supply. "Our request to the government is to ensure at least 50% supply of commercial cylinders to keep businesses afloat instead of a complete shutdown," he said.

Swamy added that ensuring 50% gas supply would enable hoteliers to continue operating with reduced menu items, providing some relief to both businesses and customers. This approach could help mitigate the worst effects of the shortage while a more permanent solution is sought.

Widespread Impact Across Andhra Pradesh

The crisis is not confined to Vijayawada alone. Swamy highlighted that the ground reality remains grim for hoteliers across the state, with nearly 50% of hotels and restaurants having already suspended operations in cities such as Nellore, Tirupati, and Guntur. More establishments in these areas are expected to follow suit in the coming days if the shortage persists.

While authorities have asserted that the situation is under control, Swamy's comments suggest a significant disconnect between official statements and the actual experiences of business owners. The ongoing shortage threatens not only the livelihoods of restaurateurs but also the availability of dining options for residents and visitors alike.

The hospitality industry in Andhra Pradesh is now anxiously awaiting the outcome of Monday's meeting, hoping for immediate intervention to prevent further closures and stabilize the supply of commercial LPG cylinders.
