Andhra Pradesh to Host World's Largest Green Ammonia Project in Kakinada

Andhra Pradesh is preparing to welcome India's first and the world's largest green ammonia project. The massive facility will come up in Kakinada. AM Green is developing this ambitious green ammonia complex. It will have a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum.

Historic Industrial Revival

The project represents a major industrial revival story for the country. It involves converting an existing brownfield ammonia-urea complex. The first major equipment erection ceremony will take place on Saturday. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan will attend the event.

Minister for ITE&C and HRD Nara Lokesh called this a historic moment for India. He said the country is now ready to export green energy as green ammonia. Key export destinations include Germany, Singapore and Japan.

Massive Clean Energy Infrastructure

The integrated system features impressive components:

  • 7.5 GW of solar and wind energy capacity
  • 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity
  • 2 GW of round-the-clock renewable power
  • Pumped hydro storage support

The facility at Pinnapuram marks India's first such project. With total investment reaching $10 billion, it represents one of the largest clean-energy investments ever made in India.

Job Creation and Global Partnerships

The project will generate substantial employment opportunities:

  • Up to 8,000 jobs during construction phase
  • Large-scale, high-skill employment during operations
  • Jobs across allied industries including renewables, logistics, storage and port services

AM Green has already secured long-term supply agreements with global players like Uniper from Germany. The company is also engaging with major companies in Japan and Singapore. This marks the first instance of green energy exports from India to Europe and advanced Asian markets.

Project Details and Timeline

The green ammonia project will be commissioned in phases:

  1. 0.5 MTPA by 2027
  2. 1.0 MTPA by 2028
  3. 1.5 MTPA by 2030

Green ammonia from Kakinada will serve multiple global purposes. It will function as clean shipping fuel, support power generation, and provide a pathway to green hydrogen. This will help advance international decarbonisation goals.

Strategic Importance and Support

The project aligns perfectly with the Integrated Clean Energy Policy of 2024. It establishes Andhra Pradesh as India's primary hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia. The state government has committed to providing comprehensive support including policy backing, infrastructure development and fast-track clearances.

Minister Lokesh emphasized the project's significance. "This project is not just an industrial investment—it is a statement of intent. Andhra Pradesh is leading India into the era of clean-energy exports and global climate leadership," he stated.

The project will replace coal, oil and natural gas with renewable energy sources. It promises zero carbon emissions. The existing Nagarjuna Fertilisers plant is being redeveloped into this green ammonia facility.

International support comes from Malaysia-based Petronas, Singapore's GIC and UAE-based ADIA. AM Green is also developing a 2 GW electrolyser manufacturing unit with Rs 2,000 crore investment.

Port-based export infrastructure will be developed specifically for global markets. This ensures smooth transportation of green ammonia to international destinations.
