Chicken Prices Stabilise in Mangaluru After Steep Hike

Mangaluru: Chicken prices have stabilised this summer after months of steep increases, offering relief to consumers, traders, caterers, and hoteliers. Over the past three months, live bird prices crossed Rs 200 per kg amid reduced production and limited supply. However, rates have now dropped to around Rs 150 per kg, with market sources attributing the decline to lower seasonal demand and improved supply conditions.

Unusual Summer Trend

Industry representatives said the recent trend is unusual, as chicken prices typically rise during the summer season, when demand linked to functions and events usually remains strong. This year, however, the price surge occurred earlier than expected, followed by a correction in the market.

As of Saturday, the live bird price is Rs 150-160 per kg, with skin-on at Rs 200 and deskinned price around Rs 230 per kg, said Vincent Cutinha, managing director of Provit Food Pvt Ltd and owner of Ideal Chicken. He noted that deskinned chicken touched around Rs 280 per kg a few months ago. He said the earlier spike was driven by a decline in production, which has since improved. While retail prices have now stabilised, hatchery operators continue to face challenges due to the rising cost and limited availability of imported medicines, he added.

Market Uncertainty Persists

Retailers said the market remains uncertain despite the current stability. Santosh Shetty of Suguna Chicken said business has been affected by unpredictable price fluctuations. Summer usually brings stronger demand and higher prices, but the pattern has reversed this year, he said.

Rajgopal Rai, a caterer associated with Dakshina Kannada Catering Owners' Association, said stable chicken rates have helped caterers and hoteliers maintain their menu prices. Any further rise in chicken costs would have forced businesses to pass on the burden to customers.
