In a fresh blow to commuters in the National Capital Region, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have been hiked once again, marking the second increase in just 48 hours. The latest revision comes amid rising input costs and global energy price fluctuations.
New CNG Rates in Delhi NCR
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the primary supplier of CNG in Delhi and surrounding areas, announced the revised prices effective from May 17, 2026. The price of CNG has been increased by Rs 1.50 per kilogram, taking the new rate to Rs 76.50 per kg in Delhi. In Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, the price now stands at Rs 79.50 per kg, while in Gurugram and other parts of Haryana, it is Rs 80.50 per kg.
Reason Behind the Hike
The price revision is attributed to the surge in global natural gas prices, which has increased the cost of procurement for IGL. The company adjusts retail prices periodically based on the average cost of gas from domestic and international sources. The recent spike in crude oil and gas prices has compelled the firm to pass on a part of the burden to consumers.
Impact on Consumers
The consecutive price hikes are expected to increase the monthly fuel expenses for CNG vehicle owners, particularly auto-rickshaw drivers and taxi operators, who rely heavily on CNG as a cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel. Industry experts warn that further increases may be on the horizon if global prices remain elevated.
- Auto-rickshaw drivers: Likely to face a monthly increase of around Rs 500-700 in fuel costs.
- Car owners: The impact will be relatively lower, but still noticeable for daily commuters.
- Bus operators: City buses running on CNG may see operational costs rise, potentially affecting fares.
Comparison with Other Fuels
Despite the hike, CNG remains significantly cheaper than petrol and diesel. Petrol in Delhi currently costs around Rs 105 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 94 per litre. The gap continues to encourage adoption of CNG vehicles, though the frequent price revisions are a cause for concern among users.
Government's Stance
The Delhi government has urged IGL to absorb some of the cost increases to protect consumers, but the company maintains that the adjustments are necessary to sustain operations. The central government is also monitoring the situation and exploring ways to stabilize gas prices through long-term contracts and increased domestic production.
Consumers are advised to check the latest rates at IGL's official website or app before refueling. With no immediate relief in sight, CNG users may need to brace for further price movements in the coming weeks.
