Begusarai's Industrial Boom Fuels Demand for New Greenfield Airport
Begusarai's Industrial Growth Spurs Greenfield Airport Demand

Begusarai's Industrial Ascendancy Sparks Push for Modern Airport Infrastructure

Begusarai, a district in Bihar, is witnessing a significant transformation into a major industrial and commercial center, leading to growing calls for the development of a greenfield airport. The existing Ulao airport, which has been largely defunct for years, is limited to handling only small aircraft, with a recent revival effort seeing an eight-seater chartered aircraft operate from there after state government initiatives.

Stakeholders Highlight Economic Imperative for Enhanced Air Connectivity

Local professionals and business leaders are vocal about the need for a new airport capable of accommodating large commercial flights. Dr. Nishant Ranjan, an orthopaedic surgeon, emphasized that Begusarai hosts industrial units of major corporations like Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), along with business offices of numerous construction and commercial companies.

"This concentration of industry results in a high volume of air passengers traveling to and from Patna airport, which is already overburdened," Dr. Ranjan explained. He added that a new airport would improve air connectivity for residents of neighboring districts such as Khagaria, Munger, Lakhisarai, and Bhagalpur, noting that ample land is available in the Sahebpur Kamal and Balia blocks for construction.

Economic Indicators Support Airport Development

Shiv Prakash Bhardwaj, a private school owner, echoed this sentiment, stating that Begusarai's economic profile justifies direct air connectivity. "The district boasts the highest per capita income in Bihar after the state capital, supported by a thriving industry and business ecosystem. This positions Begusarai as a major emerging economic power in eastern India," he said.

Arman Anand, a local college teacher, highlighted the current opportunity for proactive measures. "Begusarai is at a pivotal moment where taking the initiative to construct a new airport could catalyze further growth and development," he remarked.

Challenges and Prospects for Airport Infrastructure

The demand for a greenfield airport in Begusarai stems from:

  • Increased industrial activity and corporate presence.
  • Strain on existing infrastructure, particularly Patna airport.
  • Potential for regional economic integration and improved accessibility.

As discussions progress, stakeholders remain optimistic that addressing this infrastructure gap will bolster Begusarai's role as a key player in Bihar's and eastern India's economic landscape.
