Bengaluru's Pink Line Metro First Trial Run: Key Details & 2026 Opening Timeline
Bengaluru Pink Line Metro Trial Run Begins, Aims for 2026 Launch

In a significant step towards expanding Bengaluru's metro network, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has commenced the first mainline trial run for the much-anticipated Pink Line. The prototype trainset hit the tracks for preliminary testing on Friday, marking a crucial milestone in the project's journey towards becoming operational.

First Trial Run and Project Scope

The initial slow-speed trial was conducted on the elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere along Bannerghatta Road. This test marks the first evaluation of the train's performance under real track conditions. The prototype trainset, supplied by public sector undertaking BEML, was delivered in December 2025, setting the stage for these preliminary checks.

Under the expansive Phase 2 of Namma Metro, the Pink Line is designed to span 21.25 kilometres from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. This corridor features a substantial 13-kilometre underground segment between Dairy Circle and Nagawara, with the remaining portion being elevated.

Detailed Timeline and Testing Protocol

Officials have outlined an ambitious yet structured timeline for the corridor's commissioning. BMRCL is targeting mid-2026 for the opening of the initial elevated stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. The full Pink Line, including the complex underground sections, is scheduled for completion by December 2026, contingent upon the timely conclusion of all pending works.

The testing and certification process for the prototype train is a comprehensive affair, expected to take approximately six months. BMRCL plans to conduct rolling stock tests in a phased manner, examining various aspects of performance and safety. This rigorous protocol includes:

  • Traction and braking trials to ensure smooth acceleration and stopping.
  • Oscillation tests at varying speeds to guarantee passenger comfort and stability.
  • System integration checks with signalling, telecommunications, and power supply networks.

These tests are mandatory pre-commissioning activities required to secure statutory clearances from multiple regulatory agencies before commercial operations can commence.

Rolling Stock Delivery and Construction Progress

The delivery schedule for additional trainsets is also on track. BEML is expected to supply the second Pink Line trainset by the end of January 2026, with a total of six sets scheduled for delivery by March. These are part of a larger rolling stock contract catering to various Phase 2 corridors of Namma Metro.

On the infrastructure front, BMRCL officials report that civil works on the elevated section are at an advanced stage. Signalling works are currently in progress across the alignment. Once the extensive testing, system integration, and final approvals are secured, the corridor will be ready for a phased operational launch, promising to significantly ease connectivity in the southern and eastern parts of India's tech capital.
