GMDA to Revamp Two Key Gurgaon Roads at Rs 52 Crore in Major Upgrade
Gurgaon's Old City Roads Get Rs 52 Crore Revamp

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated a significant infrastructure project aimed at transforming two of the most congested arterial roads in the older part of Gurgaon. With a budget of Rs 52 crore, this marks the first major upgrade on these stretches since the authority's formation in 2018.

Addressing Chronic Bottlenecks in Old Gurgaon

The two road segments identified for revamp are the Basai Chowk–Old Railway Road and the Old Railway Road–IFFCO Chowk corridors. Each road is 30 meters wide and passes through densely populated zones, a mix of planned sectors and unplanned colonies. These vital links serve wholesale markets, commercial hubs, and thousands of daily commuters, making them notorious traffic choke points.

While areas across the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway witnessed systematic upgrades, old Gurgaon lagged behind the city's rapid expansion. Residents and commuters have long complained about narrow carriageways, poor surface conditions, and relentless traffic snarls on these routes.

Project Details and Scope of Work

A senior GMDA official confirmed that tenders for the repair work have been floated. The special repair work on the Basai Chowk to Old Railway Road stretch is allocated Rs 27 crore, while the Old Railway Road to IFFCO Chowk section will be upgraded for Rs 25 crore. The entire project is slated for completion within 12 months.

The official stated that the focus will be on comprehensive improvement of road quality, drainage systems, and pedestrian infrastructure. The project scope includes:

  • Improvement of the central verge and footpaths.
  • Overhaul of the drainage system.
  • Installation of guard rails, signage, and new road markings.

These measures are designed to enhance pedestrian safety and regulate traffic flow more effectively. The upgrade is also expected to strengthen connectivity to major corridors like the upcoming Dwarka Expressway.

Future Plans and Metro Coordination

The authority had previously considered building grade separators (flyovers or underpasses) on these roads to alleviate congestion. However, that plan was put on hold due to uncertainties regarding proposed metro corridors along the same routes.

The official added that "Once the metro route is finalised, grade separators can be planned in the future." This indicates a phased approach to decongestion, prioritizing immediate surface-level improvements while keeping long-term solutions in reserve.

This Rs 52 crore revamp represents a critical step in addressing the long-standing infrastructure deficit in old Gurgaon, promising better mobility and safety for its residents and commuters.
