A road infrastructure project in Bengaluru's Jayanagar, initially slated for completion within six months, has extended into a year-long ordeal, severely affecting local traders and residents. The white-topping work on a key commercial stretch between the 3rd and 4th blocks has led to reduced accessibility, declining business, and unsanitary conditions.
Impact on Local Businesses
Shivanand Naik, who operates a juice shop in Jayanagar 3rd Block, reported a significant drop in customers. "My business has fallen by around 50%. The situation becomes worse when it rains. We hope the project is finished before the monsoon," he said. The decrease in pedestrian traffic has directly impacted his daily earnings.
Several other businesses along the stretch have experienced a sharp decline in footfall due to the prolonged pre-construction phase. A roadside vendor, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that work began in March 2025 in the 4th Block. "I remember the date because I lost my mother around that time. Many shoppers face difficulties as the footpaths are in poor condition. We have been told there will be more digging on the other side as well," he added.
Environmental and Health Concerns
Piles of debris and construction materials have become informal dumping grounds, attracting pests. Jyothi Srinivas, a shop owner and long-time Jayanagar resident, highlighted the problem: "People from nearby restaurants dump their garbage in the open, and such spots become breeding grounds for rats. This has caused a rat infestation in our shop." The unsanitary conditions have added to the distress of those living and working in the area.
Official Response and Future Plans
Jayanagar MLA C K Ramamurthy assured that the road would be ready within three months. "The white-topping work will begin in a month. A major power line needs to be shifted, which is causing the delay. We discussed this at a recent meeting, and work to shift the line will start this week," he said. The Rs 10-crore project on the half-kilometer stretch is being executed by Nagarjuna Construction Company.
In addition to this stretch, white-topping work on three other roads in Jayanagar has been planned. "The white-topping project on Diagonal Road from 3rd Block to RV Road has been tendered. Maiya's hotel road (30th Cross) and 36th Cross will also be white-topped," Ramamurthy added. Residents and traders hope that these projects will be completed on time to avoid further disruption.
