Ludhiana Authorities Launch Major Crackdown on Illegal Construction
Planning authorities in Ludhiana initiated a significant enforcement campaign on Wednesday, targeting unauthorized developments across the district. The operation resulted in the demolition of 13 illegal buildings and the dismantling of infrastructure belonging to three unapproved housing colonies.
Coordinated Enforcement Drive Targets Multiple Villages
The crackdown was spearheaded by the regulatory wing of the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada), with enforcement teams focusing on unapproved developments in the villages of Dhandra, Manakwal, and Mehmoodpura. The operation involved coordinated efforts between Glada officials, police personnel, and a duty magistrate who oversaw the proceedings.
During the enforcement action, teams leveled illegal structures and tore up roads that had been constructed without proper statutory sanction. The operation proceeded without opposition from developers or residents, according to official statements.
Official Statement on Enforcement Strategy
Glada Chief Administrator Sandeep Kumar described the operation as a "special drive" that forms part of a broader punitive strategy against developers who lure residents with promises of affordable plots in colonies that fail to meet government norms or provide basic infrastructure.
"When developers did not stop the illegal construction work despite being served notices, a special team carried out the demolition," Glada officials stated. The authority has confirmed that the demolition followed a series of ignored legal notices that were previously served to developers.
Warning to Prospective Buyers
The authority issued a stern warning to the public regarding the risks of purchasing property in unauthorized zones. Residents who buy property in these unapproved areas will face significant restrictions, including:
- No Municipal Water: Water connections will be withheld from unapproved sites
- Utility Bans: Sewerage and electricity connections will not be sanctioned
- Legal Risk: Buyers may face total loss of investment if structures are leveled
Prospective buyers are being strongly urged to verify land titles and colony approvals before making any financial commitments. Glada maintains comprehensive lists of approved and regularized colonies, along with sanctioned maps, on its official website for public reference.
Sustained Enforcement Planned
To prevent what officials describe as the "mushrooming" of illegal settlements, the authority plans to maintain enforcement momentum with additional drives scheduled for the coming weeks. Beyond physical demolitions, Glada is initiating strict legal proceedings against individuals responsible for unauthorized development in the district.
The additional chief administrator of Glada confirmed that legal action will complement the physical enforcement measures, creating a comprehensive approach to addressing illegal construction in Ludhiana.
