Ludhiana Municipal Commissioner Issues Directive to Boost Property Tax Collection
In a decisive move to address a significant revenue shortfall, Municipal Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta has issued a strict directive to senior civic officials in Ludhiana to accelerate property tax collection efforts. The city is pushing to bridge a nearly Rs 41 crore gap before the conclusion of the current financial year, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
High-Level Strategy Meeting Sets Rigorous Review System
During a crucial high-level strategy meeting held at the MC Zone-A office on Wednesday, Commissioner Gupta established a rigorous fortnightly review system. This measure is designed to ensure that the municipal corporation meets its ambitious annual revenue goals effectively and on schedule.
The municipal corporation has set an annual recovery target of Rs 180 crore for property taxes. While collection efforts have been steady throughout the year, the latest financial figures reveal a substantial remaining balance that requires immediate attention.
Current Collection Status and Performance Quotas
As of January 31, the amount recovered from property taxes stood at Rs 138.5 crore. However, the outstanding balance remains at Rs 41.4 crore, indicating that approximately 77% of the target has been achieved so far.
To close the remaining 23% gap, Commissioner Gupta has fixed specific performance quotas for superintendents and zonal officers. She issued a clear warning that progress will now be closely monitored every two weeks, emphasizing accountability and timely action.
Leadership Alignment and Departmental Pressure
The strategy meeting was attended by the municipal corporation's top administrative tier, underscoring the importance of this initiative. Key attendees included Additional Commissioner Paramdeep Singh, along with Assistant Commissioners Neeraj Jain and Jasdev Sekhon.
The presence of four key superintendents — Vivek Verma, Abdul Sattar, Ashok Garg, and Satish Kumar — further highlights the departmental pressure to finalize pending assessments and collections. This collective leadership alignment aims to streamline efforts and maximize recovery outcomes.
Development Through Dues: Public Appeal for Compliance
In a direct appeal to the public, Commissioner Gupta emphasized the critical link between tax compliance and urban livability in Ludhiana. She stated, "The funds collected from residents are the lifeblood of our infrastructure. These dues are used specifically to provide basic amenities and to fund the ongoing development projects that improve the quality of life across Ludhiana."
Residents were strongly urged to clear their outstanding property tax amounts immediately. This call to action is not only to support civic development but also to help individuals avoid mounting interest charges and legal penalties associated with late submissions.
