Maharashtra Government Unveils Comprehensive Slum Redevelopment and Housing Initiative

Mumbai: In a significant move aimed at transforming the urban landscape, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is crafting a master plan for the redevelopment of 20 lakh slum dwellings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This ambitious initiative also includes the development of 10 lakh affordable houses, with provisions for rental accommodations, as announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Strategic Framework to Eliminate New Slums

Fadnavis emphasized that the construction of 30 lakh homes through the SRA is a cornerstone of the government's objective to establish the region as a major economic growth hub by 2030. To ensure sustainable urban development, a "no new slum framework" is being developed using advanced GIS-based mapping technology. This system is designed to prevent any new illegal constructions from emerging in the MMR area.

"Henceforth, this framework will be made applicable to other cities too," Fadnavis stated, highlighting the plan's potential for broader implementation across Maharashtra.

Progress on Rural Housing Under PMAY

The Chief Minister provided detailed updates on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) (Gramin) Phase 2, revealing that out of 27.87 lakh approved houses in rural Maharashtra for the fiscal years 2024-25 and 2025-26, 3.57 lakh have been completed. The remaining units are currently in progress, with the state government having allocated a substantial Rs 33,410 crore towards the scheme.

Enhanced Benefits for Homeowners

In a bid to promote renewable energy and reduce electricity costs for beneficiaries, Fadnavis announced that the government will provide additional subsidies for the installation of rooftop solar panels on houses constructed under both the urban and rural components of the PMAY schemes. This initiative aims to make sustainable living more accessible to low-income families.

Advancements Under PM-JANMAN Awas Yojana

Further expanding the housing efforts, under the PM-JANMAN Awas Yojana, 54,129 houses have been approved, with construction completed on 17,929 units. This reflects the government's commitment to addressing housing needs across various segments of the population.

The comprehensive master plan and associated initiatives underscore Maharashtra's proactive approach to urban renewal and affordable housing, setting a precedent for other regions to follow in tackling slum rehabilitation and promoting inclusive growth.
