The residents of Revati Nagar in Besa, Nagpur, are poised to receive a significant environmental and recreational enhancement as the public works department (PWD) has unveiled plans to develop a beautified public garden at an estimated cost of ₹3 crore. This ambitious project is specifically designed to create a family-friendly recreational space in this rapidly expanding locality, providing residents with convenient access to open and landscaped areas right near their homes.

Comprehensive Wellness and Leisure Facilities Planned

The proposed garden will feature an impressive mix of wellness and leisure facilities that cater to all age groups. Key amenities will include a green gym equipped with open cross-fit equipment, dedicated yoga spaces for mindfulness practices, and well-maintained jogging and running tracks for fitness enthusiasts. The landscaping plan incorporates a variety of shrubs and plantations to enhance greenery and biodiversity.

Family-Oriented Design Elements

For younger residents, basic play equipment such as slides will be installed to ensure children have dedicated recreational options. The design also includes thoughtfully planned seating areas and expansive lawns that will serve senior citizens and families looking for peaceful outdoor spaces. A senior PWD official emphasized to TOI that the project has been conceptualized with daily-use recreation as the primary focus.

"We have secured funds specifically to ensure that local residents can enjoy good-quality public facilities within walking distance of their homes," the official stated. "The emphasis remains firmly on creating open spaces, promoting fitness activities, and enhancing greenery rather than undertaking heavy construction projects."

Strategic Space Utilization and Environmental Integration

The total area earmarked for development measures approximately 80 metres by 20 metres, while an additional stretch of around 100 metres by 25 metres has been identified for a comprehensive green belt, lawn, and seating area. Officials have clarified that existing vegetation at the site will be preserved and integrated into the overall landscaping plan, demonstrating an environmentally conscious approach to urban development.

Collaborative Development and Maintenance Framework

Interestingly, the project is being developed on land owned by the nagar panchayat. While the PWD will execute all development work, the completed garden will be formally handed over to the nagar panchayat for regular upkeep and long-term maintenance. Nagar panchayat president Kirti Badole participated actively in recent planning meetings where maintenance responsibilities and operational protocols were thoroughly discussed.

Revised Project Scope and Implementation Timeline

Although the project appears as a "sports arena complex" in some official documents, officials confirm the scope has been substantially revised. "We are modifying the earlier tender specifications slightly," explained the official. "The revised plan incorporates more vegetation while reducing certain sports components to better align with community needs."

While a small synthetic badminton court is still under consideration, large-scale sports facilities have been deliberately scaled down. The project carries a completion deadline of 12 months, though officials expressed optimism about finishing major construction works before the monsoon season begins.

Community-Driven Design Evolution

This garden plan represents a significant evolution from an earlier proposal to develop a full-fledged sports complex at the same location. Residents had previously expressed strong opposition to that plan, raising legitimate concerns about potential crowding issues and possible misuse of the space. These community representations prompted authorities to reconsider the project's fundamental design.

After sustained dialogue with residents, the plan was comprehensively revised in favor of a landscaped public garden with a distinctly family-oriented approach that better reflects local preferences and needs.
