In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure, a high-level committee led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has given the green light to two major development projects for Panchkula. The ambitious plans, with a combined estimated cost of nearly Rs 128 crore, aim to solve chronic traffic congestion and revitalize neglected natural water channels in the city.
New Three-Lane Bridge Over Ghaggar River
The first and much-anticipated project is the construction of a new bridge over the Ghaggar river. This vital piece of infrastructure will be built near the Golf Club on the crucial Sector-3/21 road. The existing two-lane bridge at this location has long been a bottleneck, unable to handle the growing volume of traffic. This results in frequent and frustrating jams, particularly for the residents of Extension Sectors 23 to 28.
The new bridge promises to be a substantial upgrade. With an estimated budget of Rs 32.5 crore, the structure will span 333.9 metres in length and be 14 metres wide. Crucially, it will feature three lanes. Officials have outlined that once the construction is completed within a 24-month timeframe, a smart traffic management system will be implemented. One-way traffic will operate on each of the two bridges, a measure expected to permanently ease the congestion that plagues the area.
Transforming City Nullahs: The Jal Dhara Beautification Project
The second, and even larger, project focuses on environmental and aesthetic upliftment. It involves the comprehensive revamp of two natural water channels, locally known as nullahs or Jal Dhara, which pass through the city. Currently, these channels are in a deplorable state, characterized by stagnant water, foul odors, rampant mosquito breeding, and unchecked garbage dumping.
With a hefty allocation of Rs 95.42 crore, the beautification plan is extensive. It targets two specific stretches:
- The nullah running from the revered Mata Mansa Devi Mandir to Rajeev-Indira Colony, covering a distance of 5.6 kilometres.
- The Singh Nullaha, stretching from Sector 1 to the Industrial Area, spanning 5.3 kilometres.
The transformation blueprint is multi-faceted. It proposes constructing a 1.5-metre wide precast central channel to streamline water flow, backed by robust RCC retaining walls. To enhance public utility and safety, the project includes the installation of GI fencing, dedicated cycle and walking tracks, and steel bridges at necessary points. Furthermore, the rejuvenated corridors will be equipped with street lighting and extensive landscaping, turning these neglected spaces into green, recreational assets for the community.

The approval of these twin projects marks a pivotal moment for Panchkula's development trajectory. The new Ghaggar bridge directly addresses a critical daily hassle for thousands of commuters, promising smoother connectivity and reduced travel time.
