Pune Metro Line 3 First Phase Targets June Launch with 12 Stations
The initial phase of the Maan-Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 in Pune, featuring 12 stations, is anticipated to commence operations by June. According to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the works are expected to be finalized by the end of May, with a rollout planned for the following month. This update follows a recent review meeting led by the newly appointed commissioner, Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari.
Progress and Timeline for the Elevated Corridor
While the first 12 stations are projected to be ready by May-end, construction on the remaining 11 stations is advancing concurrently. The complete 23.2-kilometer elevated corridor is likely to become fully operational by September. Delays in the remaining stations are attributed to incomplete work on entry and exit points, along with associated passenger access infrastructure. PMRDA officials have directed the concessionaire, the Tata group, to expedite efforts and adhere to the established timeline.
Metro Line 3, which is critical for commuters traveling to and from the Hinjewadi IT Park, is in its final stages, with approximately 94.2% of the overall project completed. Currently, signalling technical trials are underway, and other necessary inspections have been conducted.
Commissioner's Review and Focus on Quality
Commissioner Chaudhari has conducted a thorough review of construction quality, technical bottlenecks, and station readiness. He has instructed contractor companies to accelerate the remaining tasks. PMRDA officials emphasized that priority is being given to completing station access, passenger facilities, and operational systems to ensure public usability by June.
Once operational, the Metro is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor. This improvement will benefit thousands of IT employees who currently endure lengthy commutes due to road traffic.
Official Statements and Project Execution
Chaudhari stated, "Our target is to complete the first phase of 12 stations by May-end. We have conducted an on-ground inspection of all stations and instructed officials to accelerate the work. PMRDA will extend all necessary support." The project is being executed in mission mode, as per the directions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with a focus on accelerating civil and systems work while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Public Expectations and Concerns
Commuters who had anticipated an April opening expressed frustration over the delays. Manoj Rao, an IT professional, commented, "We do not expect the operations to begin by June as the works will be delayed during the monsoon." This sentiment highlights the challenges posed by seasonal weather conditions, which could impact the timeline.
The development of Metro Line 3 represents a significant step forward in Pune's public transportation infrastructure, aiming to enhance connectivity and reduce environmental impact through decreased vehicular traffic.
