Pune's Nagar Road Set for Major Infrastructure Upgrade with Elevated Road and Metro Viaduct
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha Metro have officially commenced preparations for a transformative infrastructure project on Nagar Road. Starting from March 6, joint inspections are being conducted along the entire stretch from Ramwadi to Wagholi to pave the way for the construction of a six-lane elevated road and a Metro viaduct.
Project Details and Key Features
This ambitious project spans 4.7 kilometers and is poised to become the first six-lane elevated road in Pune exceeding 4 kilometers in length. Authorities are meticulously reviewing proposed designs, the alignment of the Metro viaduct, and the locations of Metro stations. Special attention is being given to available spaces for entry-exit points to ensure seamless integration with existing traffic patterns.
According to Maha Metro's detailed project report (DPR), four Metro stations are planned along this corridor: Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi Bypass, and Tuljabhavani. These stations are expected to significantly enhance public transportation accessibility in the bustling Nagar Road area.
Traffic Management and Public Concerns
Local residents and frequent commuters have expressed apprehensions regarding potential disruptions during the construction phase. In response, PMC has proposed the provision of ramps at Kharadi Bypass and two additional locations to facilitate smooth entry and exit for vehicles. The administration is also urging Maha Metro to allocate adequate spaces near Metro stations for the safe movement of both vehicles and pedestrians.
A civic official, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the importance of these joint inspections. "As Maha Metro has initiated the tendering process to appoint a construction agency, we have decided to conduct thorough inspections of the entire route before work begins. These inspections, scheduled from Friday, aim to address doubts and loopholes, thereby minimizing complications during construction," the official stated.
Expansion to Hadapsar and Future Plans
In a parallel development, PMC has announced plans for similar joint inspections with Maha Metro in Hadapsar. Here, an elevated road along with a Metro viaduct is proposed ahead of Bhairoba Nala Chowk, with the Metro line extending till Loni Kalbhor. Officials confirmed that these inspections will be undertaken in the coming days, with the exact schedule currently being finalized.
This comprehensive infrastructure initiative underscores Pune's commitment to urban development and improved connectivity. By integrating elevated roads with Metro systems, the city aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide efficient transportation solutions for its growing population.
