In a significant move to address water distribution challenges, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has unveiled a major infrastructure plan. The civic body is set to develop new water infrastructure near the Surat International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 77 crore. The primary goal is to enhance the supply of fresh water to the city's coastal localities, including Dumas, Sultanabad, Bhimpore, and nearby areas.
Details of the Ambitious Water Project
The core of this initiative involves the construction of a massive 120-lakh-litre underground water storage tank. This facility will be complemented by a booster house, toilet blocks, and security cabins to ensure efficient and secure operations. Furthermore, the project includes plans to build five new overhead water tanks. To connect this enhanced storage capacity to households, an extensive pipeline network will be laid across the targeted coastal regions.
Driving Modernisation and Sustainable Management
The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the corporation's top office-bearers. SMC officials have stated that this project is not just about solving immediate water woes. It is a strategic step towards modernising the city's overall infrastructure and establishing a framework for sustainable water management for the future.
