Tambaram Bus Terminus in Chennai Set for Major 7 Crore Modernization
The Tambaram bus terminus in Chennai, long plagued by severe congestion, encroachments, and inadequate amenities, is poised for a comprehensive transformation. Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has sanctioned a substantial budget of 7 crore rupees to modernize and decongest this critical transport hub, with work scheduled to commence in April and targeted for completion before the monsoon season arrives.
Daily Operations and Commuter Impact
Serving as a vital origin point, the terminus facilitates over 500 daily bus trips to destinations including Padappai, Maraimalai Nagar, Walajabad, Naduveerapattu, Somangalam, Nallur, Sriperumbudur, and core city areas such as Anna Nagar. This extensive network caters to more than 10,000 commuters each day. Despite this heavy footfall, the terminus suffers from significant issues, with unauthorized vendors occupying large portions of the premises, severely hindering free movement and creating chaotic conditions.
Public Concerns and Infrastructure Deficiencies
Local residents and activists have voiced strong concerns about the lack of basic facilities. V Saritha, secretary of the Ganesh Nagar residents' welfare association, highlighted the poor state of amenities, stating, "The bus terminus lacks basic facilities. There is one public toilet near the market, which is not cleaned regularly despite being a paid facility. The buses are often parked one after another in a haphazard way, blocking traffic. While planning the terminus upgrade, corporation should create enough space and ensure that buses are parked properly." Additionally, V Santhanam, an activist from Chromepet, pointed out the absence of bus shelters in many areas, particularly after Selaiyur and Camp Road, forcing commuters to wait for long hours under the hot sun. He also noted missed revenue opportunities, suggesting that the corporation could generate income by placing advertisements on bus shelters, similar to practices in Chennai corporation, and should focus on improving medians, hoardings, and street lights.
Official Plans and Upgrade Details
Tambaram corporation commissioner S Balachander outlined the official strategy, explaining, "We are assessing ways to remove encroachments and decongest the traffic on Grand Southern Trunk Road. We floated tenders for the restoration, and the work is set to begin in April. We plan to complete the work before the onset of monsoon." The upgrade will encompass several key improvements, including the installation of a new roof, enhanced lighting systems, and CCTV cameras for security. To address the issue of unauthorized vendors, only registered stalls will be permitted to operate within the terminus premises, with strict enforcement measures planned against those violating regulations.
Broader Context and Future Outlook
This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance urban infrastructure in Chennai, addressing persistent challenges in public transport. By focusing on decongestion and modernization, the project aims to significantly improve the daily commute for thousands of residents, ensuring a safer, more efficient, and better-equipped terminus. The timely completion before the monsoon is crucial to prevent further disruptions and maintain smooth operations during the rainy season.
