Vijayawada's Critical Subway Project Faces Major Delays at Tender Stage
The construction of a vital subway (underpass) at the Netaji Flyover in Vijayawada, intended to connect Ranigarithota and MG Road, is experiencing frustrating delays that have stalled progress. Despite the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) floating tenders for the project, the works remain stuck at the tendering stage, creating what locals describe as a situation of "two steps forward and three steps back."
Project Overview and Urgent Need
This subway is critically important because the stretch from Varadhi to Benz Circle on NH-16 has been identified as a major black spot in the city, with a high incidence of accidents. The new infrastructure aims to provide seamless connectivity, allowing motorists and pedestrians from Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar areas to access MG Road safely without having to cross the busy NH-16 road.
The planned subway will be 50 metres long, 2.5 metres in height, and 5 metres in width. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 3 crore and will be fully funded by NHAI. Once construction begins, the target completion time is six months from the date the work is awarded to the contracting agency.
Tender Process Delays
NHAI initially aimed to start the subway construction by the end of March, but even two months after floating the tenders, the process has not been finalized. According to Vidyasagar from the NHAI Vijayawada project implementation unit (PIU), two bids were received for the subway tender, and technical evaluation is currently underway at the NHAI regional office.
"The technical evaluation is expected to take another week, after which the letter of acceptance (LOA) will be awarded to the successful bidder. Following that, construction works would be grounded immediately," Vidyasagar told TOI. This delay means that the project, which was expected to be underway by now, is still in the preliminary stages, causing concern among residents and commuters.
Impact and Future Steps
The inordinate delay in finalizing the tenders has pushed back the entire timeline, affecting the anticipated benefits of improved road safety and traffic flow. The subway is designed to alleviate congestion and reduce accidents on the hazardous NH-16 stretch, making its timely completion a priority for the city's infrastructure development.
As the technical evaluation continues, stakeholders are hopeful that the process will be expedited to avoid further setbacks. The completion of this project within the six-month timeframe is crucial for enhancing connectivity and safety in Vijayawada, underscoring the need for efficient project management and execution by NHAI and the contracting agencies involved.
