Jadavpur University Startup Triumphs at National Carbon Zero Challenge

In a significant achievement for India's clean energy sector, Aldrogen Energy, an emerging clean-tech startup originating from the chemical engineering department of Jadavpur University in Kolkata, has been recognized as one of the top three winners at the prestigious Carbon Zero Challenge (CZC 5.0). The startup, which was incubated at the university's innovation council, impressed judges with its innovative 6.25 kVA hybrid hydrogen-powered generator, a zero-emission solution designed to address the country's growing off-grid and decentralized energy needs.

Innovation and Development Behind the Winning Technology

The groundbreaking generator was developed by Sayantanu Mandal in collaboration with chemical engineering assistant professor Raj Kumar Das, under the mentorship of mechanical engineering professor Dipankar Sanyal. Mandal explained the technology in detail, stating, "Aldrogen Energy's hybrid hydrogen-powered generator delivers reliable, clean electricity by using hydrogen stored in a safe solid-state form and oxygen from the air to generate power. Supported by an integrated battery system, the generator provides stable electricity while producing only water as a by-product." He further highlighted its advantages, including zero emissions, near-silent operation, smart safety features, and remote monitoring capabilities, positioning it as a sustainable alternative to conventional diesel generators.

Carbon Zero Challenge 5.0: A Platform for Climate-Focused Innovation

Hosted by IIT Madras from January 29 to 31, 2026, CZC 5.0 served as a national eco-innovation and entrepreneurship platform aimed at accelerating climate-focused technologies. The competition attracted a staggering 1,321 applications from across the country, from which 25 startups were carefully selected for the finals. Each of these finalists received Rs 5 lakh to develop a prototype, showcasing the event's commitment to fostering practical solutions. Among these 25, Aldrogen Energy stood out, securing a top-three finish alongside EDS Wagon Tech and Karotimam, with each winner awarded Rs 10 lakh as prize money.

Potential Applications and Future Commercial Plans

The startup's generator holds immense potential across various sectors, offering a versatile and eco-friendly energy solution. Key applications identified include:

  • Defense and Transportation: Providing reliable power in remote or mobile settings.
  • Data Centers and EV Charging Infrastructure: Supporting critical infrastructure with clean energy.
  • Residential Communities and Rural Electrification: Enhancing energy access in underserved areas.
  • Disaster Management: Offering portable and sustainable power during emergencies.

Mandal revealed that the startup has already entered the pilot deployment stage and is actively exploring investment avenues. "We are working towards launching it commercially within the next one year," he added, indicating a promising timeline for market entry.

University and Alumni Support Fuels Success

The achievement has been met with pride and enthusiasm from Jadavpur University officials. Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee remarked, "It is a proud moment for the university. Our alumni extensively supported them with funds and mentorship." This sentiment was echoed by Debashis Ghosh, honorary treasurer of the Jadavpur Chemical Engineering Alumni Association (JCEAA), who noted, "This achievement reinstates the changing mindshare of youth towards entrepreneurship and future job creators." The support from the university and its alumni network has been instrumental in nurturing the startup from its inception through to this national recognition.

Aldrogen Energy's success at the Carbon Zero Challenge not only highlights the innovative spirit at Jadavpur University but also underscores the growing importance of sustainable technologies in India's energy landscape.
