Indian Stock Market Faces Sharp Decline Amid Oil Price Surge
Indian equities continued their downward trend on Monday, driven by crude oil prices surpassing $100 a barrel, which heightened risk-off sentiment across Dalal Street. The sell-off has particularly impacted mid- and small-cap stocks, with traders in Gujarat reporting severe margin stress as mark-to-market losses diminish collateral values.
Margin Calls and Forced Liquidations Intensify
Market participants indicate that brokers have increased vigilance on margin shortfalls. In numerous cases, client positions have been squared off when additional funds were not arranged within specified deadlines. Traders in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodara, who depend on margin trading facilities (MTF) and pledged share funding, are among the hardest hit. Falling stock prices simultaneously reduce the value of pledged securities and MTF-bought holdings, exacerbating the financial strain.
Broader Market Pressures and Global Factors
The BSE Sensex has declined approximately 7.70% over the past month, with pressure attributed to global cues such as an IT-sector sell-off and escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the Israel-Iran conflict. The broader market has experienced even sharper drawdowns, leading to more frequent margin calls for leveraged traders.
Viral Mehta, west zone head of a stock broking firm, explained, "Under MTF and pledge-based funding, a decline in the market value of collateral reduces available margin. If clients fail to top up cash or provide additional approved securities within the broker's deadline, positions can be liquidated to restore required margin levels. Brokers may also initiate immediate liquidation when continuous declines push the cash ledger negative, resulting in forced selling of pledged holdings."
This situation highlights the vulnerabilities in leveraged trading during volatile market conditions, with traders facing significant losses and operational challenges.
