Chennai's Tambaram to Welcome Two New Bamboo Parks in Green Initiative
Residents of Tambaram in Chennai are set to benefit from the development of two new bamboo parks, as part of the municipal corporation's efforts to expand green spaces within its jurisdiction. The civic body has allocated a budget of 3 crore rupees for this project, which will be established at Sembakkam and Perungalathur locations.

According to corporation officials, each park will be developed on approximately one acre of land, with plans to plant at least 100 bamboo plants in each area. Current State of Green Spaces in Tambaram
Tambaram Corporation covers a total area of 87.6 square kilometers, with about 13 square kilometers currently designated as green spaces. Official data indicates that the corporation manages around 198 parks within its limits. However, only about 120 of these parks are actively maintained, while others face issues such as encroachment or are involved in ongoing litigation in courts.
Residents have expressed concerns over the poor condition of many existing parks, citing lack of maintenance as a primary issue. Common problems include damaged play equipment, overgrown vegetation, and inadequate lighting. Some residents also report that certain parks have become gathering spots for tipplers and illegal activities, raising safety and usability concerns.
Community Feedback and Official Response
M Gandhi, president of the Pallavaram residents welfare association, highlighted the maintenance challenges in areas like Pallavaram and Chromepet. He stated, "The corporation has been constantly announcing plans, but it is not taking action to implement them. In Pallavaram and Chromepet areas alone, there are about 50 parks maintained by the corporation, and many of them have become hubs for illegal activities."
In response, Tambaram Corporation commissioner S Balachander provided an update on the new project, noting that it is still in the initial stages. He explained, "We are in the preliminary stage of land acquisition. Once the locations are finalised, construction will begin. Necessary action will also be taken to monitor parks that are encroached." This statement underscores the corporation's commitment to not only creating new green spaces but also addressing existing issues with park maintenance and encroachment.
