Mizoram's Sairang Station Handles First Auto Rake, Boosting Regional Economy
First auto rake arrives at Sairang Station, Mizoram

In a landmark development for Mizoram's transport sector, the newly inaugurated Sairang Railway Station has successfully processed its first direct inward automobile train. The special rake carried a consignment of 119 cars from Changsari near Guwahati, marking a historic moment for the state's logistics and automotive industry.

A Historic Milestone for Mizoram's Connectivity

The Ministry of Railways hailed this movement as historic, emphasizing its multifaceted benefits. This initiative is set to significantly enhance vehicle availability in Aizawl and surrounding areas, reducing the state's previous heavy dependence on long-distance road transport. The ripple effects are expected to benefit the entire automobile ecosystem in Mizoram, including dealers, service providers, and end customers.

This achievement is a direct outcome of the strategic Bairabi-Sairang railway line, which was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13. During the inauguration, PM Modi flagged off three crucial train services: the Rajdhani Express linking Aizawl (Sairang) to Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal), the Mizoram Express connecting Aizawl (Sairang) with Guwahati, and an Express train to Kolkata. This event symbolically marked Mizoram's full integration into India's expansive national rail network.

Engineering Marvel Unlocks Economic Potential

The 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang line is a testament to engineering perseverance, carved through Mizoram's challenging mountainous terrain. The project features an impressive 45 tunnels, overcoming geographical hurdles to link the state. This infrastructure is not just about passenger travel; it plays a crucial role in strengthening Mizoram's strategic and economic integration with the rest of India, facilitating smoother trade and commerce.

The response from passengers to the new rail services has been overwhelmingly positive, far exceeding initial expectations. According to data, the Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express is running with an occupancy of 147%, the Sairang-Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115%, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express at 139%. Travelers have praised the services for being convenient, affordable, and a major time-saver, providing improved access to major cities, economic hubs, educational institutions, and advanced medical facilities in neighboring states.

Driving Growth and Inclusive Development

The arrival of the first automobile rake is more than a logistical event; it represents a major leap in Mizoram's infrastructural and economic narrative. By providing a reliable and efficient alternative to road transport for heavy goods like vehicles, Indian Railways demonstrates its commitment to fostering regional connectivity and inclusive growth in the Northeast. This development is poised to reduce logistics costs, ensure timely delivery of vehicles, and stimulate local businesses linked to the automotive sector, contributing to the state's overall economic development.
