In a tragic incident reported from the Fagaliya area of Bakhasar police station limits in Sedwa subdivision of Barmer district, two members of a family lost their lives while their four-year-old son remains critical after a suspected snakebite. The snake is locally known as "Peevna," commonly referred to as the Common Krait, one of the most venomous snakes found in desert regions.
The child is currently undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Barmer district headquarters. The deaths of the husband and wife have sent shockwaves across the Sedwa subdivision and heightened concerns about snake-related incidents in the region.
Sequence of Events
According to local accounts, the couple reportedly spotted a snake inside their house late Sunday night and killed it. Villagers later claimed that another snake, believed to be its mate, bit three members of the family during the night. However, this claim is based on local belief and has not been scientifically verified.
Chohtan Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jetha Ram Meghwal said that a tragic snakebite incident had come to light in Fagaliya village. Reportedly, three members of the same family were bitten by a venomous snake while they were asleep. The deceased were identified as Savarna Ram (28) and his wife Lachi (26). Their four-year-old son is undergoing treatment.
Police Investigation
According to police, the couple noticed a snake inside their house on Sunday night and killed it. Feeling safe afterward, they went to sleep along with their young son. During the night, all three family members reportedly suffered snakebites and later lost consciousness. On Monday morning, when neighbors noticed no movement inside the house, they entered and found the couple and the child unconscious. Suspecting snakebite, villagers rushed them to Sedwa Hospital. After initial treatment, all three were referred to a higher medical center due to their critical condition. During treatment, Savarna Ram and Lachi succumbed, while their son continues to receive medical care.
DSP Meghwal said villagers informed police that a dead snake was found near the house and claimed another snake may have entered the house afterward and bitten the family members. Police officials visited the spot and have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Fear Grips the Area
Meanwhile, fear has gripped the entire area following the tragedy. Villagers reported sightings of snakes near the incident site, increasing anxiety among residents. People are exercising extra caution during nighttime and have demanded that authorities deploy snake-rescue teams in the region. Local residents say that the Peevna snake has long been associated with fear and folklore in desert areas. Following this incident, concerns among villagers have intensified. Health and administrative officials have advised residents to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention in case of any snakebite.
