Gaya Railway Station Platform Numbering Confuses Travelers Amid Rs 300 Crore Renovation
Gaya Station Platform Numbering Baffles Passengers During Renovation

Gaya Railway Station's Platform Numbering System Puzzling Travelers During Major Renovation

Rail users at Gaya railway station, particularly occasional travelers, are expressing bewilderment over the station's platform numbering system. This confusion arises even as a substantial Rs 300 crore renovation project is in progress, aiming to transform the station with an airport-like appearance.

Multiple Platforms with the Same Number

Currently, the station features four platforms that are all numbered with variations of '1'. These include platform 1, which has existed for a long time, along with three newer additions: platform 1A, platform 1B, and platform 1C. Notably, the old platform number 6 has been re-designated as 1A, while a previously unnumbered 'pilgrim platform' is now labeled 1C. A newly constructed platform has been assigned the number 1B.

Passengers have criticized this numbering scheme as irrational and inexplicable. The proliferation of platforms starting with '1' has led to significant confusion, especially for those unfamiliar with the station layout.

Impact on Prestigious Trains and Pilgrim Facilities

Interestingly, high-profile trains such as the Gaya-Howrah Vande Bharat Express are typically assigned to platform 1C. This platform was originally intended for pilgrims and included attached facilities like cooking spaces and other amenities for religious travelers. However, with the renovation, these self-cooking facilities are no longer available on the new platforms, adding to the inconvenience.

Official Responses and Challenges

Kaushalendra Pratap, a member of the East Central Railway (ECR) Zonal Rail Users Committee, acknowledged that the platform numbering is confusing, particularly for pilgrims who may visit only once in their lifetime. He has committed to raising this issue at the committee's next meeting.

According to an anonymous railway official, altering platform numbers is not a straightforward process due to technical and administrative implications. Changes could necessitate modifications to the signaling system and address track-related operational issues, making revisions complex.

The official explained that the platforms at Gaya station were not constructed simultaneously. Instead, expansions and additions have been made over time based on evolving needs, land availability, and infrastructural constraints. This piecemeal development has contributed to the current numbering confusion.

Ongoing Passenger Concerns

Beyond the platform numbering issue, passengers continue to face challenges with train connectivity. The lack of direct trains to destinations like Bengaluru and Pune, along with limited options on the Gaya-Mumbai route, remains a persistent problem for travelers using the Grand Chord line.

As the renovation project advances, addressing these operational and logistical issues will be crucial to enhancing the travel experience and achieving the envisioned airport-like standards at Gaya railway station.
