Major Boost for Tejas Programme as HAL Secures Engine Supply
In a significant move to strengthen India's indigenous fighter aircraft capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has finalized a major agreement with GE Aerospace. The deal, signed on Friday, involves the procurement of 97 advanced jet engines destined for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A programme.
Details of the Landmark Agreement
The contract specifies the supply of 97 F404-GE-IN20 jet engines along with a comprehensive support package from General Electric Company. This procurement is directly linked to the execution of the 97 Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A programme for the Indian Air Force.
According to official statements, the delivery timeline for these powerful engines is set to commence in the year 2027. The entire supply chain operation is scheduled for completion by 2032, ensuring a steady and planned enhancement of India's aerial combat resources.
Strategic Context and Financial Backing
This engine supply pact follows a monumental financial commitment made by the Ministry of Defence just two months prior, in September. The ministry had sealed a massive ₹62,370 crore deal with HAL specifically for the acquisition of these 97 Tejas MK-1A light combat aircraft.
The Tejas itself is a formidable single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft, engineered to operate effectively in high-threat air environments. Its design allows it to undertake a versatile range of missions, including critical roles in air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and precision strike operations.
