Bhubaneswar: The Odisha state government will construct 23 modern truck terminals along national highways across the state, equipped with parking facilities and hotel amenities to ease congestion and improve logistics infrastructure, Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena announced on Thursday.
Project Details and Purpose
The terminals are designed to provide organized parking spaces and basic rest facilities for truck drivers and helpers. The minister stated in a social media post that the project is in its final stages of construction. He added, "The project is expected to boost freight movement efficiency and road safety across major highways."
Execution and Warnings
The project has been assigned to National Highways Logistics Management Ltd for execution. However, due to the slow pace of work at several sites, Jena issued a stern warning to the contracting agency, urging it to expedite completion. "Despite repeated directions, progress has not been satisfactory at some locations. Any further delay will not be tolerated," Jena said. He directed the transport department to consider assigning the remaining work to a new agency if the current contractor fails to meet the deadline.
Strategic Locations and Facilities
Officials stated that the truck terminals are planned at strategic points along national highways to provide safe halting spots for long-haul vehicles, reduce roadside parking, and minimize accidents caused by driver fatigue. Each terminal will feature designated truck bays, restrooms, food facilities, and lodging arrangements.
Broader Impact
The state government has been focusing on strengthening logistics infrastructure in response to increasing freight traffic on highways, especially due to rising industrial and mining activity. Once completed, the truck terminals are expected to improve convenience for drivers and benefit local economies along the highways.
