Former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi vacated her official bungalow in Patna on Tuesday, June 29, 2026, following a government eviction notice. She subsequently moved into the residence of her son, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, accompanied by her husband and former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Government Notice Triggers Eviction
The Bihar government issued a notice to Rabri Devi on June 22, 2026, directing her to vacate the 5, Anne Marg bungalow within seven days. The notice stated that she was no longer entitled to the official accommodation as she had ceased to hold any constitutional position. Rabri Devi was Chief Minister from 1997 to 2005 and later served as a Member of Parliament until 2014.
According to sources, the government cited rules that former chief ministers are eligible for official accommodation only for a specified period after leaving office. Rabri Devi had been occupying the bungalow for over a decade after her tenure ended.
Move to Tejashwi's Residence
Rabri Devi shifted her belongings to 7, Circular Road, the official residence of Tejashwi Yadav, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was staying at the same bungalow, also moved with her. The family had been living together at the Anne Marg property for several years.
Speaking to reporters, Rabri Devi said, "We have complied with the government's order. We have moved to my son's house as per the notice." She added that they had no further comment on the matter.
Political Reactions
The eviction sparked political controversy, with the ruling Janata Dal (United) and Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Rashtriya Janata Dal of misusing official facilities. RJD leaders, however, termed the eviction a political vendetta. Party spokesperson Manoj Jha said, "This is a targeted action against the family of a former chief minister. The government is acting vindictively."
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary defended the notice, stating, "Rules are rules. No one is above the law. The government has simply enforced existing norms."
Impact on Political Landscape
The eviction comes amid heightened political tensions in Bihar, with the RJD-led opposition accusing the NDA government of authoritarian measures. Analysts suggest that the issue could galvanize RJD supporters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in 2027. The family's move to Tejashwi's residence is seen as a strategic consolidation of political resources.
