PM Modi Celebrates US Trade Deal as Symbol of Global Confidence in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Saturday that the interim trade agreement with the United States serves as further evidence of the international community's increasing trust in India. Speaking at a community event for persons of Indian origin in Kuala Lumpur, the Prime Minister emphasized that this development, along with a series of recent trade deals, marks India's transformation from merely a vast market into a central hub for investment and trade.
India's Rising Stature on the Global Stage
Addressing an enthusiastic audience estimated at 10,000 people, PM Modi highlighted the expanding network of trade agreements India has secured with nations including the UK, UAE, Australia, New Zealand, Oman, the European Union, and now the US. "Trust has become India's strongest currency," he proclaimed, receiving a spirited response from the crowd. He noted that while India was previously viewed primarily as a large consumer market, it is now recognized as a reliable partner for growth and economic collaboration.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties with the United States
The Prime Minister elaborated that the framework for the trade agreement reflects the deepening trust, dynamism, and robustness of the partnership between India and the United States. He extended his gratitude to former President Donald Trump for his personal commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations. "This agreement strengthens the 'Make in India' initiative by unlocking new opportunities for our hardworking farmers, entrepreneurs, MSMEs, startup innovators, fishermen, and others," Modi stated. He added that it is expected to generate large-scale employment, particularly benefiting women and youth.
Boosting Innovation and Global Supply Chains
PM Modi underscored the shared commitment between India and the US to promoting innovation, asserting that this framework will further enhance investment and technology partnerships. "It will also strengthen resilient and trusted supply chains, contributing to global economic growth," he said. As India progresses towards building a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India), the Prime Minister reaffirmed the nation's dedication to forming future-oriented global partnerships that empower its citizens and promote shared prosperity.
Political Context and Opposition Scrutiny
The Prime Minister has expressed optimism regarding the recent trade deals, especially the significant agreements with the EU and the US. He has celebrated these achievements in closed-door meetings with governing alliance MPs and in parliamentary speeches, portraying them as a global endorsement of India's growing economic influence. However, the deal with the US is anticipated to face scrutiny from the opposition when Parliament reconvenes on Monday. Congress and other parties have accused the government of compromising Indian interests, setting the stage for potential debates on the agreement's implications.
