Golaghat DC Leads Field Inspection for Flood Preparedness in Assam
Golaghat DC Inspects Embankments for Flood Readiness

Dibrugarh: The region is currently under the influence of the south-west monsoon, prompting Golaghat district commissioner Pubali Gohain to lead a field inspection of embankments across Morangi, Khumtai and Dergaon to assess preparedness for potential floods and erosion this season.

On Monday, officials from the district water resources department, the co-district commissioner of Dergaon, the assistant commissioner and circle officers of Morangi and Khumtai accompanied her.

The inspection focused on vulnerable stretches along the Dhansiri, Kakojan, Gelabil and Ghiladhari rivers, where rising water levels during heavy rain can trigger bank erosion and embankment breach. Teams checked the condition of existing protection works, including geo-bags and porcupine structures, and reviewed the stock and readiness of relief materials.

Officials briefed the DC on recent reinforcement works and installation of porcupine structures and geo-bags. Gohain inspected critical points for signs of seepage, undercutting or settlement and directed immediate remedial action where weaknesses were detected.

As a precautionary measure, the DC ordered activation of embankment monitoring committees at the gram panchayat and block levels and directed them to maintain 24-hour surveillance throughout the monsoon. The committees will coordinate with local patrolling teams and report unusual observations to the district control room for swift follow-up.

“We must be proactive rather than reactive. Continuous monitoring and timely reporting can prevent a problem from escalating into a large-scale emergency. Volunteers, panchayat representatives and department staff must work together to secure vulnerable stretches and assist residents during any contingency,” she added.

The DC also reviewed relief inventories, including sandbags, boats, portable pumps, first-aid kits and dry rations, to ensure adequate stockpiles and rapid mobilisation. She asked department heads to verify the condition of equipment and confirm logistics for transporting relief items to remote locations if needed.

Urging the public to remain alert and cooperative, she appealed to residents to stay in touch with the administration.
