Rajasthan Bus Strike Saturday Over Fines, Body Code Norms

Rajasthan Private Bus Operators Announce Complete Strike on Saturday

Private bus operators across Rajasthan have called for a complete strike on Saturday, protesting against what they describe as the transport department's overly strict enforcement of bus body code norms. The operators allege that despite possessing all mandatory documents, they are being subjected to heavy fines as part of aggressive revenue collection drives.

Widespread Resentment and Disruption Expected

Operators claim that even buses that comply with prescribed norms are not being spared, leading to widespread resentment within the industry. With approximately 10,000 sleeper buses operating in the state, the strike is anticipated to severely disrupt private bus services across major routes, affecting thousands of passengers.

Kailash Sharma, Vice-President of the Private Bus Operator Association Stage Carriage, highlighted the sector's mounting pressure. "Since the Jaisalmer bus accident, aggressive action against sleeper buses has intensified, putting the entire sector under immense strain," he stated.

Operators Detail Grievances and Compliance Issues

Sharma further explained the operational challenges faced by operators. "Even after submitting all documents online and receiving valid receipts from authorities, during on-ground checks, challans are issued and hefty fines are recovered from us. If we protest, passengers end up waiting in the middle of their journeys, causing them unnecessary suffering," he added.

Rajendra Sharma, President of the All Rajasthan Contract Carriages Bus Operators Association, pointed out that despite compliance with safety agreements, fines continue. "An agreement was reached with the state government to implement safety-related modifications, including installing four emergency exits, a fire safety system, hammers for breaking glass, and removing luggage carriers from bus roofs. However, even after adhering to these requirements, we are still being fined," he said.

Threat of Complete Shutdown and Broader Issues

The operators have warned that if the series of punitive actions does not cease, it could lead to a complete shutdown of all types of bus services in Rajasthan. In a letter to the state government, the private bus operators, represented by the Bus Operator Society Rajasthan, outlined multiple ongoing issues.

These problems extend beyond fines and include concerns related to:

  • Bus body code compliance
  • Registration type approval processes
  • Bus body manufacturer regulations
  • Luggage carrier specifications
  • Emergency door requirements
  • Increased motor vehicle tax
  • Bus stand halting points
  • Parking space availability

The strike underscores the deepening rift between private bus operators and the transport department, with operators demanding fair treatment and clarity in enforcement to avoid further disruptions to public transportation in the state.
