South Western Railway Zone Nears Complete Electrification with Significant Cost Savings

The South Western Railway (SWR) zone has made substantial progress in its electrification mission, achieving 96% coverage of its network by the conclusion of 2025. This development represents a crucial step forward as Indian Railways advances toward its goal of nationwide electrification.

Financial and Environmental Benefits of Electrification

According to official SWR data, the transition from diesel to electric traction has resulted in remarkable financial savings totaling at least Rs 1,345 crore over the past three financial years, specifically between 2022-23 and 2025-26 (up to February). This substantial economic benefit underscores the strategic importance of railway electrification initiatives.

The zone successfully converted 186 passenger trains from diesel to electric operation during this period, with the current financial year witnessing the highest annual conversion rate of 56 trains. In terms of fuel conservation, the electrification drive saved an impressive 1,50,573 kilolitres of high-speed diesel that would have otherwise powered diesel locomotives. Notably, 52,940 kilolitres of this total were conserved in the 2025-26 financial year alone.

Karnataka's Railway Electrification Landscape

Recent data presented in the Lok Sabha by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reveals that Karnataka's overall rail network has achieved 97% electrification. "Electrification of the railway network on Indian Railways has been taken up in mission mode. So far, about 99.4% of the broad-gauge network has been electrified. Electrification in the remaining network has been taken up," Vaishnaw stated during the parliamentary session.

Despite this progress, Karnataka remains among five states and union territories that have not yet achieved complete railway electrification. It is important to note that railway electrification is measured in route kilometres, where double or multiple tracks are counted as a single route for calculation purposes.

Current Electrification Status and Operational Details

Within the SWR zone's extensive network spanning 3,721.6 route kilometres (including new line developments), 3,305 RKM had been electrified as of December 2025. Among operational routes specifically, electrification currently stands at 89%.

Several sections continue to operate on diesel traction, including:

  • Ginigera–Sindhanur (84.6km)
  • Talkal–Linganbandi (45.5km)
  • Bagalkot–Kudachi (30km)
  • Rayadurga–Doddahalli (81.7km)

Recent Achievements and Future Projects

One of the most significant recent accomplishments was the commissioning of the challenging 55km Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road section in December. This ghat stretch, known for its difficult terrain and lack of approach roads, has created new possibilities for enhanced rail connectivity. The successful electrification of this section strengthens the potential for introducing a Vande Bharat service between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, which would represent a major upgrade in regional rail transportation.

Key pending electrification works that remain underway include:

  1. The 120 RKM Amaravathi–Vyasa Colony stretch, where foundation work is nearing completion
  2. The Donigal–Shiribagilu section spanning 32 kilometres
  3. The Caranzol–Sonalium section covering 8.1 kilometres

The South Western Railway zone's electrification progress demonstrates the systematic implementation of India's railway modernization strategy, combining environmental sustainability with significant economic benefits through reduced fuel consumption and operational costs.
