Telangana Exports Face Risk from Global Tensions, Trade Uncertainty

Geopolitical Tensions Cast Shadow Over Telangana's Export Momentum

Geopolitical tensions and global trade uncertainties are beginning to impact Telangana's export growth, with nearly half of the state's outbound shipments tied to markets currently experiencing instability or policy uncertainty. This emerging challenge threatens to disrupt what has been a period of remarkable export performance for the region.

Vulnerable Export Destinations

Out of Telangana's ten major export destinations, five are currently facing turmoil or have uncertain trade relations with India. These critical markets include:

  • The United States
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Kuwait
  • Bangladesh
  • The United Arab Emirates

Notably, approximately 50% of Telangana's total exports are concentrated in these vulnerable markets, highlighting the significant exposure to global instability.

Export Concentration and Market Share

A detailed analysis of Telangana's top export destinations reveals the following market shares:

  1. United States: 23.64%
  2. United Arab Emirates: 11.74%
  3. Saudi Arabia: 6.74%
  4. China: 3.69%
  5. France: 3.38%
  6. United Kingdom: 2.72%
  7. Turkey: 2.32%
  8. Czech Republic: 1.95%
  9. Bangladesh: 1.83%
  10. Kuwait: 1.75%

This concentration of exports in regions experiencing geopolitical tensions underscores the substantial risks posed by ongoing conflicts in West Asia and uncertainty surrounding international trade agreements, according to industry experts.

Robust Growth Amid Emerging Challenges

Despite these emerging headwinds, Telangana's export performance has demonstrated remarkable resilience. In the 2024–25 fiscal year, merchandise exports surged to Rs 1,61,843 crore, representing a substantial 39.3% increase from Rs 1,16,182 crore in 2023–24.

This impressive growth has been primarily driven by several key sectors:

  • Aircraft and spacecraft parts
  • Pharmaceutical products
  • Organic chemicals
  • Electrical and engineering goods

Agricultural Exports Face Slowdown

Agricultural and processed food exports continue to play a significant role in Telangana's export economy, with approximately 500 registered exporters in this sector. However, there are clear signs of strain.

"In terms of agricultural products, we have about 500 registered exporters. However, there is a noticeable slowdown in exports to Gulf countries and other nations where trade agreements have not yet been finalized," stated R. P. Naidu, assistant General Manager at the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Recognition and Rankings

Telangana's export capabilities have received national recognition through several important metrics:

  • According to NITI Aayog's Export Preparedness Index 2024, Telangana ranks eighth overall among Indian states
  • The state ranks second among landlocked states in export preparedness
  • In the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) 2024 report, Telangana has been placed in the 'Achievers' category among landlocked states

Rising Logistics Costs Create Additional Strain

Exporters across sectors are reporting that escalating logistics costs are adding significant pressure to their operations. K. Nageswara Rao, technical head at Sam Agritech Limited, explained the challenges facing agricultural exporters:

"We export tonnes of pomegranates to Gulf countries. However, we are finding it increasingly difficult due to substantially increased freight charges. We continue shipping to Gulf countries via Europe to honor our commitments to long-standing partners, but these additional costs will inevitably impact next year's balance sheet. We remain hopeful that the situation will stabilize soon."

Rao added an interesting market dynamic: "We are actually receiving more orders now because many competitors cannot afford the current flight charges."

Shipping Constraints Across Sectors

The shipping challenges extend beyond agricultural products to other export segments as well. Y Ramana, General Manager of Eggway International Asia Private Limited, detailed the difficulties facing egg product exporters:

"Securing vessel space has become extremely difficult for exports, and shipping charges have reached exorbitant levels. We export egg powder and frozen egg liquid to Gulf countries, including Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. There is currently a significant lull in business due to these constraints."

The impact appears widespread across export categories. A Hyderabad-based chocolate exporter confirmed similar challenges: "We are experiencing a noticeable dip in orders, while both air and sea freight charges remain stubbornly high."

Looking Ahead

As Telangana navigates these complex global trade dynamics, the state's export sector faces a critical juncture. While the underlying export growth remains strong, the combination of geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties, and rising logistics costs presents substantial challenges that will require strategic navigation in the coming months.

The concentration of exports in vulnerable markets, coupled with shipping constraints across multiple sectors, suggests that diversification of export destinations and continued innovation in logistics solutions may become increasingly important for sustaining Telangana's export momentum in an uncertain global environment.
