Uttar Pradesh Homestay Registrations Skyrocket to Over 2,000 in Eight Months
The number of registered homestays in Uttar Pradesh has experienced a remarkable surge, crossing the 2,000 mark within a brief period of approximately eight months. This significant increase is directly attributed to the swift and effective implementation of the state's bed and breakfast and homestay policy, which was officially launched in mid-2025.
Official Figures Highlight Rapid Growth and Certification
According to official data, since the policy's introduction in mid-2025, registrations have soared past 2,000. Out of these, 750 homestays have already been certified, while the remainder are undergoing a fast-tracked process to ensure timely approval and operational readiness.
Government Officials Emphasize Economic and Employment Benefits
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized that these numbers reflect the state's dedicated focus and proactive efforts to generate employment through the tourism sector. "Tourism is a key pillar in Uttar Pradesh's ambitious vision to achieve a $1 trillion economy. The substantial rise in homestay registrations clearly indicates that our strategies to enhance the tourism economy are progressing successfully," stated Singh.
Additional Chief Secretary Amrit Abhijat highlighted the efficiency behind this growth, noting the "speed of work" as a critical factor. "While the state established a robust policy framework, it has also been diligent in translating that policy into tangible action. Faster scrutiny procedures, district-level monitoring committees, and targeted awareness campaigns have played pivotal roles in this achievement," he explained.
Personal Stories and Broader Economic Impact
Harsh Vardhan Pandey, who left his management job in Bengaluru to start a homestay in Varanasi, shared his perspective. "Uttar Pradesh aims to create one lakh rooms under the bed and breakfast framework in a time-bound manner to meet increasing demand. This enthusiasm not only showcases the economic opportunity but also underscores public confidence in the government's initiatives," said Pandey.
Policy Details and Infrastructure Standards
The policy allows residents to register as either urban or rural homestays, offering up to six rooms with a maximum of 12 beds. Key requirements include:
- The owner must reside on the premises.
- Prescribed infrastructure standards must be met, such as proper bedrooms, toilets, electricity, and water supply.
Strategic Approach and Social Benefits
Officials detailed that this initiative is designed to expand accommodation capacity while fostering income generation at the household level. It supports reverse migration and enables families with spare rooms to earn locally. "The expansion relies on distributed micro-inventory rather than large hotel infrastructure. This approach is faster, more cost-effective, and deeply embedded within the social fabric," they noted.
This comprehensive strategy not only boosts tourism but also promotes sustainable economic development across Uttar Pradesh, aligning with broader goals of employment creation and community empowerment.
