Hyderabad Defence Firm VEM Technologies Inks Teaming Agreement with German Naval Giant TKMS for Torpedo Production

In a significant boost to India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies Private Ltd has signed a teaming agreement with German naval systems major ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The pact, formalized on Tuesday, outlines an ambitious plan to produce approximately 500 heavyweight torpedoes annually for the Indian Navy, marking a pivotal step under the government's Make-in-India initiative.

Strategic Partnership to Enhance Naval Strength and Technological Independence

A teaming agreement, a form of subcontracting where a smaller business collaborates with a larger entity, will facilitate the transfer of advanced torpedo technology from TKMS to VEM Technologies. This collaboration is designed to strengthen the Indian Navy's operational readiness and contribute to India's technological self-reliance in defence systems.

Michael Ozegowski, executive vice-president of Atlas Elektronik, a subsidiary of TKMS, emphasized the strategic importance of this deal. He stated, "The transfer of our torpedo technology enables VEM to make a decisive contribution to strengthening the Indian Navy and to India's technological independence."

Project Details and Manufacturing Hub in Hyderabad

The agreement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in September 2025. The project will focus on producing heavyweight torpedoes tailored for the existing submarine fleet of the Indian Navy. All manufacturing activities will be centered in Hyderabad, with VEM Technologies taking charge of:

  • Procurement of raw materials
  • Fabrication processes
  • Manufacturing operations
  • Final assembly of the torpedoes

Atlas Elektronik will support this endeavor by transferring critical torpedo technology along with necessary software licenses, ensuring seamless production and adherence to global standards.

Long-Term Vision and Future Prospects

Representatives from VEM Technologies highlighted that this partnership will integrate the company into the production chain of advanced naval weapon systems, enhancing its expertise and market position. The latest agreement formalizes the next phase of cooperation in torpedo development and production programs.

In the medium term, the collaboration is expected to evolve into a joint venture between TKMS and VEM Technologies. This proposed venture will not only supply heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian market but also explore potential export opportunities, positioning India as a key player in the global defence export landscape.

Signing Ceremony and Company Backgrounds

The signing ceremony was attended by officials from both companies, including senior executives of VEM Technologies and representatives from TKMS and Atlas Elektronik. TKMS, a global naval systems company with over 9,000 employees, operates major shipyards in Germany and Brazil, specializing in submarines, naval surface vessels, maritime electronics, and security technologies.

VEM Technologies, based in Hyderabad, specializes in the design, development, and manufacture of weapon and air-based systems, making it an ideal partner for this high-stakes defence project.
