CBSE Denies Vedant Shrivastava's Re-evaluation Allegations
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has categorically rejected the claims made by Vedant Shrivastava, a Class 12 student, who alleged that his marks were revised upwards following a re-evaluation process. The board termed the assertions as a "blatant lie" and stated that no such re-evaluation had taken place.
Background of the Controversy
Vedant Shrivastava, a student from a school in Delhi, had initially scored 489 out of 500 marks in his Class 12 board exams. He later claimed that after applying for re-evaluation, his marks were increased to 497. This claim sparked widespread debate on social media and raised questions about the transparency of the CBSE's evaluation process.
However, CBSE officials clarified that the student had not applied for re-evaluation at all. "The claim of re-evaluation and subsequent increase in marks is completely false. The board has a strict procedure for re-evaluation, and no such request was received from Vedant Shrivastava," said a senior CBSE official.
CBSE's Official Statement
In a detailed statement, CBSE said, "It is a blatant lie that Vedant Shrivastava's marks were increased after re-evaluation. The board has verified its records and found no application for re-evaluation from the student. The marks awarded initially were final." The board also warned against spreading misinformation and urged students to rely on official channels for accurate information.
The controversy began when Vedant claimed in a social media post that his marks were upgraded after he paid a fee for re-evaluation. He alleged that the board had initially made an error in tabulating his marks. CBSE, however, maintained that the marks were correctly calculated from the beginning.
Impact and Reactions
The incident has highlighted the need for clear communication regarding the re-evaluation process. Many students and parents have expressed confusion over the procedures. According to CBSE rules, re-evaluation is only allowed for theory papers, and the process involves a detailed scrutiny of the answer sheets. The board charges a fee for this service, but the decision to revise marks is based solely on the re-evaluation outcome.
Education experts have called for greater transparency in the evaluation system. "Such controversies undermine the credibility of the examination system. It is important for boards to have a robust mechanism to address grievances and communicate clearly with students," said Dr. Ramesh Kumar, an education analyst.
Meanwhile, Vedant Shrivastava has not issued any further statement after CBSE's denial. His initial claims had garnered significant attention, with many questioning the integrity of the board's evaluation process. The CBSE has urged students to verify any information about results or re-evaluation through official sources.
CBSE's Re-evaluation Process
The CBSE allows students to apply for re-evaluation of theory papers within a specified period after the results are declared. The process involves a re-check of the answer sheets by a different evaluator. If any discrepancy is found, the marks are revised accordingly. The board has emphasized that the process is transparent and that all applications are processed in a timely manner.
In the 2023 board exams, over 1.2 lakh students applied for re-evaluation, and only a small percentage saw a change in their marks. The board has maintained that the re-evaluation process is fair and that any claims of widespread errors are baseless.
