The Rajasthan education department has issued show-cause notices to 175 government schools across the state for failing to achieve satisfactory enrolment numbers. The academic session began on April 1 this year as part of an ambitious plan to boost student enrolment in government institutions.
Identified Schools Show Decline
According to records on the department’s portal, schools with a significant drop in student numbers as of May 10, compared to the 2025-26 academic year, have been identified. An official order issued on Monday by Director of Secondary Education Sitaram Jat expressed deep regret over the lack of participation in the flagship enrolment programme.
The order stated, “It is a matter of deep regret that, despite the instructions issued periodically by the department, your school’s participation in this flagship programme remains extremely minimal and falls short of departmental expectations.”
Praveshotsav Campaign Results
In the first phase of the enrolment drive conducted across Rajasthan, more than 5.5 lakh new students have enrolled in government schools, according to official records. This figure includes 269,526 boys and 284,530 girls. The ‘Shala Darpan’ report revealed that during the Praveshotsav campaign, the schools in question failed to show progress towards enrolment targets. Instead, a decline in total enrolment was recorded compared to the previous year.
The order further noted, “This reflects an attitude of apathy regarding the Praveshotsav initiative and serves as an indication of the negligence exercised by you.”
Disciplinary Action Threatened
The department has asked school administrations to explain why disciplinary proceedings should not be initiated against staff under the Rajasthan Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1958, for defying orders issued by higher authorities.
In the last week of March, the state education department launched the ‘Praveshotsav’ enrolment drive. Through door-to-door surveys, officials were instructed to identify children eligible for school and enrol them. The initiative aimed to enrol all children aged 3-18 years and ensure 100% retention.
