Nagpur University Introduces Summer Special Exams for Final-Year Students

Nagpur University (NU) is conducting special examinations in summer for the first time, aimed at final-year students who need results for postgraduate admissions at national-level institutes. While special exams for athletes are common after winter examinations, this initiative marks a significant step to support students pursuing higher education.

Application Process and Timeline

NU has requested all eligible final-year students to submit their applications through their college principal to the director of the students welfare department. The university plans to complete the process within 25 days and announce results before July 5 to ensure students do not miss admission deadlines. This timely action is crucial as many national institutes have already started their registration portals for admissions.

Background of the Decision

In May, the university allowed students to skip university examinations if they clashed with entrance tests conducted by national institutes, including IIT, CUET, and other processes. However, it was later realized that even after appearing for exams, students might not receive results in time for upcoming admission rounds. Senate member Manmohan Bajpai raised this issue with Vice-Chancellor Manali Kshirsagar on Saturday, who assured that special examinations would be held soon. Bajpai stated, "The VC has instructed the exam section to immediately plan the special exam and target publication of results by July 5. Many admission rounds for professional courses like MTech and MBA have begun in other cities. Final-year students from NU will need a marksheet to participate."

Exam Section Plans and Student Response

NU officials confirmed that the exam section will issue a notification to call applications from affected students. So far, 40 students have applied for the special exam, but officials believe many more are affected. They are encouraging students to apply in large numbers. Once sufficient applications are received, exams will be announced within eight days, and results will be released in another eight days. This is the first time the university is conducting such exams during the summer session. Normally, special exams are held for sportspersons after winter exams due to tournament commitments.

Impact on Students with Preliminary Results

Results for some final-year courses, including those of affected students, have already been published. Many students were marked absent and received a 'fail' result. However, officials stated that once these students apply for the special exam, their results will be updated accordingly.

Long-term Recommendations

Bajpai earlier urged the NU administration to prepare the examination schedule for the academic session 2026-27 in a way that prevents overlap with major competitive exams such as UPSC, MPSC, IIT entrance tests, and professional course admissions. He emphasized that the university should ensure the new academic session begins on time while safeguarding the academic interests of Vidarbha students. He expressed willingness to discuss with the administration to find a practical solution and appealed to the VC for an immediate decision in the students' best interest.
