VC Calls for Bold Steps to Revamp Davangere University
Davangere University Vice-Chancellor Rangaswamy has emphasized the need for calculated risks to transform the institution, highlighting systemic challenges in India's higher education sector. Speaking on July 9, 2026, he noted that India spends approximately Rs 1.43 lakh crore annually on higher education, yet many universities struggle with relevance and quality.
Current Spending and Structural Hurdles
Rangaswamy pointed out that despite the significant annual expenditure of Rs 1.43 lakh crore, the higher education system faces issues such as outdated curricula, inadequate research output, and low employability of graduates. He stressed that incremental changes are insufficient and that universities must adopt innovative strategies to meet contemporary demands.
Vision for Davangere University
The VC outlined a roadmap focusing on interdisciplinary programs, industry partnerships, and digital transformation. He argued that risk-taking is essential to break free from bureaucratic inertia and to foster an environment conducive to academic excellence and entrepreneurship. According to Rangaswamy, Davangere University aims to become a model for regional universities by leveraging local resources and global best practices.
Impact on Students and Faculty
Rangaswamy urged faculty to embrace change and students to seek skills beyond traditional degrees. He called for a culture of innovation where failure is seen as a stepping stone to success. The transformation, he said, will require collaboration with government, industry, and alumni to secure funding and expertise.
