BCG India Chairman Advocates for Human-Centered Leadership at IIM Indore Convocation
At the 27th annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIM-I), Janmejaya Sinha, Chairman of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) India, delivered a powerful address emphasizing that people must be at the core of all systems, strategies, and technologies. Speaking to the graduating batch, Sinha asserted that recognizing humans as sentient beings is essential for effective leadership in today's complex world.
Leadership Beyond Numbers and Strategies
Sinha outlined a leadership approach that transcends traditional metrics and plans. "Leaders today must learn to listen, observe and understand people before making decisions," he stated. He explained that these principles enable leaders to engage more meaningfully with individuals and contexts, thereby strengthening trust, understanding, and collaboration within organizations.
He identified three key qualities for impactful leadership:
- Curiosity: A drive to explore and learn continuously.
- Empathy: The ability to connect with and understand others' perspectives.
- Continuous Learning: A commitment to personal and professional growth.
"Curiosity, empathy and continuous learning are essential to build stronger teams and meaningful organisations," Sinha added, noting that the ability to connect with people often defines successful leaders.
Institutional Relevance and Graduate Responsibilities
M M Murugappan, Chairman of the board of governors at IIM Indore, addressed the graduates, highlighting that longevity alone does not make a great institution. "Its ability to remain relevant in a constantly evolving world is what truly matters," he said. He distinguished between complicated problems with clear solutions and complex problems that require thoughtful, adaptive responses.
Murugappan urged the graduates to carry forward fearlessness, generosity, wisdom, and drive as they step into greater responsibilities. "The defining capability of this generation will not merely be problem-solving, but the ability to navigate ambiguity with clarity and resilience," he emphasized.
Anchors for Future Success
IIM-I director Himanshu Rai spoke about three anchors to guide graduates in their journey ahead:
- Purpose: Having a clear sense of purpose helps individuals stay grounded, especially during difficult choices.
- Integrity and Credibility: These define leadership in the long run, particularly in challenging situations.
- Impact: Success should be measured not only by personal achievements but by the positive impact on society through compassionate and responsible leadership.
Rai also shared that the institute is focusing on expanding global collaborations, strengthening research initiatives, and introducing programs that align with emerging industry needs to stay at the forefront of management education.
Celebrating Academic Excellence
The convocation ceremony marked a significant milestone for 798 students from seven flagship programs who were awarded degrees. Gold medallists were felicitated for their outstanding academic performance, recognizing their hard work and dedication as they prepare to embark on the next phase of their professional lives.
This event underscored IIM Indore's commitment to nurturing leaders who prioritize human values and societal impact, setting a benchmark for management education in India.
