IIM-Bangalore to Launch First Overseas Campus in Indonesia

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) is set to establish its first international campus in Indonesia, marking a significant expansion of India's premier business education abroad. The campus will be located at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in East Java, Indonesia, as part of a collaboration between the two countries to enhance educational and economic ties.

Curriculum Focused on Emerging Business Trends

The curriculum at the Indonesia campus will incorporate five key elements of the emerging business landscape: global supply chains, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management. This design aims to equip students with skills relevant to modern global challenges and opportunities.

According to an official statement from IIM-Bangalore, the program will offer a mix of core management disciplines and specialized modules tailored to the Southeast Asian context. The institute plans to leverage its expertise in research and pedagogy to deliver a world-class education that addresses the needs of businesses operating in a rapidly evolving environment.

Strategic Partnership and Government Support

The establishment of the campus is supported by both the Indian and Indonesian governments, aligning with India's National Education Policy 2020, which encourages internationalization of higher education. The Indonesian government has designated the Singhasari SEZ as a hub for education and innovation, providing infrastructure and regulatory support for foreign institutions.

IIM-Bangalore's director stated, "This partnership reflects our commitment to nurturing future-ready leaders who can navigate complex global business landscapes. Indonesia offers a dynamic ecosystem for learning and growth." The campus is expected to begin operations by 2027, initially offering postgraduate programs and executive education courses.

Impact on Regional Education and Economy

The move is expected to strengthen educational ties between India and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states, fostering cross-cultural exchange and research collaboration. It also positions IIM-Bangalore as a key player in global business education, competing with other international business schools in the region.

Local Indonesian officials have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will attract investment and talent to the Singhasari SEZ, boosting the local economy. The campus is projected to host around 500 students in its first phase, with plans to scale up based on demand.

This development comes as part of a broader trend of Indian educational institutions expanding overseas, with IIM-Bangalore leading the way in management education. The institute's international campus is expected to serve as a model for future collaborations between India and other nations in the education sector.
