IIT Kanpur's Building Bharat Sampaark Boot Camp Ignites Innovation in Civil Engineering
In a significant push to bridge the gap between academia and industry, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur recently hosted the Building Bharat Sampaark Innovation Boot Camp in Civil Engineering. This immersive three-day event, held on campus, was conceived and spearheaded by the Association of Infrastructure Industry (India) as part of its ongoing initiative to redefine civil engineering education in the country.
A Collaborative Effort for National Impact
The boot camp was organized in a robust partnership with the JSW Group and received crucial support from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India under the Manthan platform. The program was further strengthened through collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), with IIT Kanpur serving as the academic partner. This marks the second chapter of the Building Bharat Sampaark series, building on the momentum of its inaugural program held earlier at IIT Gandhinagar.
The core mission of the boot camp is dedicated to strengthening innovation capacity among civil engineering students through structured industry–academia collaboration. It aims to move beyond theoretical knowledge, preparing the next generation of engineers to tackle real-world infrastructure challenges with practical, scalable solutions.
An Immersive Experience for Over 300 Participants
The program successfully brought together a vibrant cohort of over 300 civil engineering students from leading institutions across India. They were joined by distinguished faculty members and senior industry professionals, creating a dynamic environment for knowledge exchange. The boot camp was meticulously structured around a series of interactive sessions, insightful panel discussions, one-on-one mentorship engagements, and a culminating Hackathon-cum-Start-up Contest.
This format enabled students to actively ideate and prototype innovative solutions to pressing national infrastructure issues, reinforcing the event's role as a premier, focused platform for applied learning and innovation in the civil engineering domain. A particularly encouraging and defining highlight of the camp was the strong and enthusiastic participation of women civil engineering students, showcasing the growing diversity and talent in the field.
Leadership Perspectives on Engineering the Future
Dr. Rajaneesh Dasgupta, Trustee and Director General of the Association of Infrastructure Industry (India) and the National Director of Building Bharat Sampaark, emphasized the program's visionary goal. He stated that the initiative is envisioned to fundamentally "redefine how civil engineers are prepared for India's future," ensuring they are equipped with the skills needed for the nation's ambitious infrastructure development.
Echoing this sentiment, IIT Kanpur Director Professor Manindra Agrawal highlighted the critical skills fostered by such initiatives. "Such initiatives help young engineers develop critical thinking, practical judgement and the ability to innovate responsibly at scale," he remarked, underscoring the importance of responsible innovation in large-scale projects.
Nilesh Narwekar, CEO of JSW Cement, expressed his optimism after witnessing the event firsthand. He noted that the palpable energy and engagement at IIT Kanpur demonstrated convincingly that "the next generation of civil engineers was ready to move beyond textbooks to solve real-world problems." This industry endorsement underscores the boot camp's success in creating a tangible link between academic learning and industrial application, setting a new benchmark for engineering education in India.
