Former Minister Deciphers 'PHULE' Acronym at University Celebration
Former Minister of State for Education, Sanjay Paswan, delivered a significant interpretation of the word 'PHULE' during a commemorative event in Lucknow. Speaking at the inauguration of the four-day foundation day celebration of Dr Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Paswan explained that each letter in the name of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule represents a core value: Power, Humanity, Utility, Liberty, and Education.
Event Coincides with Phule's Birth Anniversary
The university celebration was strategically timed to coincide with the birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule, held on Saturday. This alignment underscored the institution's commitment to honoring the legacy of one of India's foremost social reformers. Addressing students and teachers during the national seminar titled 'Education as the Foundation of Inclusive Development: In the Vision of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule,' Paswan emphasized Phule's lifelong dedication to eradicating untouchability, challenging the oppressive caste system, and championing women's education.
Advocacy for the 'GLAD' Concept
In his address, Paswan strongly advocated for the adoption of the 'GLAD' concept, which stands for Gandhi, Lohia, Ambedkar, and Deen Dayal. He asserted that following the ideals of these four visionary leaders can pave the way for a more just, equitable, and empowered society. This framework, he suggested, complements the values embedded in the 'PHULE' acronym, creating a holistic approach to social reform and educational advancement.
University Leadership Honors Phule's Legacy
BBAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Raj Kumar Mittal, also spoke at the event, highlighting the profound contributions of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Mittal noted that Phule's work gave a new direction to society through education, transforming it into a tool for empowerment and social change. The vice-chancellor's remarks reinforced the university's mission to uphold these principles in its academic and community engagements.
Multimedia and Exhibition Highlights
The celebration featured diverse activities to educate and inspire attendees. BBAU's electronic multimedia research center screened a documentary detailing the life, struggles, and contributions of Jyotiba Phule, providing a visual narrative of his impact. Additionally, an exhibition was organized, displaying items related to rural industries, handicrafts, traditional arts, and local products. This exhibition aimed to connect Phule's advocacy for grassroots empowerment with contemporary efforts in sustainable development and cultural preservation.
The event served as a powerful reminder of Phule's enduring influence on education and social justice, encouraging ongoing dialogue and action in these critical areas.
