Sambalpur University Suspends Assistant Professor Amid Sexual Harassment Inquiry
Authorities at Sambalpur University have taken decisive action by suspending an assistant professor following serious allegations of sexual harassment made by a PhD scholar. The suspension order was formally issued by the university's registrar on Friday, effectively relieving the faculty member of all academic and administrative responsibilities.
Internal Complaints Committee Investigation Underway
The university's internal complaints committee (ICC) conducted a preliminary inquiry into the allegations and subsequently recommended the professor's suspension. This measure ensures that the ongoing investigation proceeds in a fair and unbiased manner, free from any potential interference or influence.
The official order explicitly stated: "Whereas the matter is under examination by the internal complaints committee, Sambalpur University, and it has recommended withdrawing the faculty from all academic and administrative duties."
University officials have confirmed that the ICC is diligently examining the complaint in strict accordance with the provisions outlined in the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013. The committee is expected to complete its detailed inquiry promptly.
Context of Increased Vigilance in Higher Education
This case marks the first reported incident since the Odisha state government issued directives to all higher education institutions to activate their internal complaints committees. This mandate came in response to a tragic incident last year, where a student at a Balasore college allegedly set herself ablaze after being sexually harassed by her head of department.
Notably, that particular college lacked a functional ICC when the student initially filed her complaint against the professor on June 30. The absence of such a committee highlighted systemic gaps in addressing harassment complaints effectively.
In a related development, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj informed the state assembly last year that a total of 19 sexual harassment complaints had been formally filed across various colleges and universities in Odisha during 2024. This data underscores the pressing need for robust mechanisms to address such issues within academic institutions.
The suspension at Sambalpur University represents a critical step towards accountability and demonstrates the institution's commitment to upholding a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff. The outcome of the ICC's investigation will be closely monitored as it unfolds.
