Tamil Nadu Applies for 150 Additional MBBS Seats in Government Medical Colleges

A senior health department official in Chennai announced on Wednesday that the state government has applied for 150 new undergraduate medical seats across three state-run medical colleges. This move aims to increase access to affordable medical education while no new government colleges are planned at this time.

Seat Expansion Across Three Districts

The Directorate of Medical Education, which oversees state-run medical institutions, has submitted applications to the National Medical Commission for an increase of 50 MBBS seats each in government medical colleges located in Namakkal, Tiruvallur, and Tirupur districts. If approved, these additional seats will be incorporated into the seat matrix for the upcoming academic year.

In 2025, Tamil Nadu reported having 5,200 MBBS seats in government medical colleges, plus an additional 50 seats at AIIMS Madurai. The proposed expansion represents a strategic enhancement of existing infrastructure rather than establishing new institutions.

Ramanathapuram Campus Utilization

Officials noted that while there is physical capacity to add seats at the Ramanathapuram government medical college as well, this option is currently on hold. The campus is being utilized by approximately 200 medical students from AIIMS Madurai across four batches of 50 students each.

Classes for these AIIMS students are being conducted at the Ramanathapuram facility because construction of the permanent AIIMS campus in Thoppur is still ongoing. This temporary arrangement has temporarily limited expansion opportunities at that location.

Impact on Medical Admissions

Education experts believe the additional seats will help alleviate competition during the medical admission process. "It is beneficial to have more seats in government medical colleges since the fees are affordable and their associated hospitals experience substantial patient footfall," explained R Narasimhan, a NEET coaching specialist.

The expansion initiative reflects Tamil Nadu's commitment to strengthening its public medical education system by maximizing existing resources and infrastructure. The state's approach focuses on enhancing capacity at established institutions rather than creating new colleges, potentially offering more students access to quality, affordable medical training.
